Going for a post-apocalyptic take on Stryker from Mortal Kombat 3.
Not sure if I will stick with the bat with nails to replace his night stick, or if I will stick with those grenades. Was thinking about possibly molotov cocktails or some other homemade type of bomb.
I'm also really tempted to put the riot-style helmet on him, but I don't like obscuring so much of the head - tough call.
Wow, this looks really cool. I think going with the nightstick is the right choice; the first picture looks like some post-apocalyptic dude who happened to fashion some armour out of a police riot shield, the second actually looks like a cop (well, kind of). Have you considered simply sticking with the patrol hat? I like the riot helmet, but I think the patrol hat is a large part of Stryker's visual identity, so it'd be interesting to see what it'd do for this design.
Also, have you thought anything about colours? Personally I'd love to see you get some blue and white in there, and not just the typical tired blacks, browns and greys that seem to come with this sort of theme.
Looking great so far, anyway, and I'm looking forward to future updates.
He made me think of the Mad Max universe
I’m liking the concept, especially his face, and the fact that he’s using the environment around him as armour, can’t wait to see more
Jigsaw - I gave the hat a try, and while I really wanted to stick with the riot helmet, it did take away from Stryker's identity, so I am sticking with the hat for now.
And yes, I completely agree about the colors - I too would like to stay away from the typical desaturated palette. Those dirty/muddy colors are some what unavoidable, but I will try and get that bright blue and white somewhere in there, it's Stryker's signature colors after all. I actually wanted to attach the red/blue light from police cars on to his back - but it seemed way more superficially out of place than justifiably practical.
Thanks to all for the feedback!
Developed the concept more, worked on the back. In case it wasn't clear, it's supposed to be a broken off piece of a police car door that is on his back. The stop sign is an homage to his "friendship", where he acts as a cross walk officer. If anybody has more ideas for little doo-dads or junk I can slap on him, let me know.
Awesome, just awesome. Definitely looks more like Stryker now that he's wearing the hat, and I absolutely love the stop sign on the back of his shoulder.
Well here's the color pass. Changed the forearm up some - now it's a tire piece for the elbow pad, and a broken off sewer pipe tied on with dog collars (from his K9 unit). Also made the stop sign look more like an actual size one, it looked kinda silly before I think. Also added some broken sunglasses, not sure if I'll keep 'em, but seems like with this guy the more "stuff", the better.
Colours look great. Gotta say I prefer the older look of his left arm, though. The tire feels a bit redundant when he's already got the big one over his shoulder, and I think it makes sense for him to have at least a little bit of actual riot gear on. I think the spikes made for more interesting asymmetry in the silhouette as well.
nice work dude, the only thing that stands out to me is that the "stop" sign doesn't read correctly because of it's scale. [feels too small] could you maybe use a smaller portion of the sign? the shattered riot shield is integrated very well.
AKAperly - it was even smaller before, and I enlarged it - but you are right. In the final iteration I think I will make it even larger so it doesn't look so "off" - exactly as you said - I'll use a smaller portion, it doesn't take much to get across what it is anyway.
Nothing exciting here, but I figured it was time to show something.
Here are some of the basemeshes that will go into Z-Brush. Still have more objects to model, but getting the guy's general form is the most important part, so I'll be tweaking this some more.
Very cool hi poly yo but a couple things i would like to see is more defined gloves and different sculpt for the pants. Folds and rinckels
But other that that this looks awesome yo
I like how the sculpt turned out. But the back of the boots could be better with a smoother surface. Leather conforming onto the muscles makes the boot material look a little too soft.
This is totally awesome! Damn, now its gonna be hard to choose only one model to vote for
You should make the stop sign into part of a riot shield bent into shape and riveted to the front of another piece of metal or something. Love the colored concept. Great stuff!
akacg - I worked on the pants since then and did my best to make the folds/wrinkles look more natural. It's not great, but it was an imporvement, so thanks for the advice!
EmAr - I took your advice and smoothed out the boots.
TorQue - glad you dig the concept!
Been busy with a lot of things, so I got some catching up to do. I've already started the color since posting this, but I figured it was good to show how the bake went just by itself:
After looking at the wireframe, I'll probably go in and add some poly's to certain areas - like the butt and torso area where the poly's get rather large and fewer of them.
Does anybody know why you have to have 2 separate beauty shots? What is supposed to be in the second one...a different pose? Back view? And why is the aspect ratio so wide for a single character? Any help would be appreciated.
Oooh! Lookin gorgeous Nuke... all you have to do is add a dirt and grime pass to the texture and he'll be perfect! Can't wait to see what he looks like when he's finished!
Maybe the aspect ratio is wide so you can fit in some close ups of the head etc. on the side?
To be honest, I was thinking something more along the lines of this...
Just a quick paint over but if you were to overlay a good dirty texture on top of the clothes in your diffuse, it would add so much more depth. Right now he just looks too clean for the post-apocalyptic design you've given him. I say spend another day really dirtying him up and it'll totally pay off. Give him some scars and grime to really sell the idea that he's been fighting a brutal battle to stay alive!

Absolutely loving the tyre as a shoulder guard! Keep it up, I'm dying to see this develop.

Love the crosswalk Stop sign from his Friendship, nice touch!! The Broken riot shield pieces are great. Also I can't wait for MK9 next month.

Either way, here's the final submission:
