Adam and I are stepping into the the arena to conquer and dominate all mortal challengers! Scream for the mercy of a quick death as you melt in the fires of the cataclysm of the Living Forest!
For centuries, the souls of the foolish who venture into the Living Forest have been devoured by the trees. Tsang Tsung made the unwise decision to send an army through the forest - never to be seen again. There are those that say the trees and the souls they take become one. In a sense, the living trees ARE the souls who get eaten.
Now we watch as the hellfire breaks open the ground to claim those souls which have been stored, bringing them into the Nether-realm where they will be tortured for eternity.
Behold,
THE DYING FOREST
Here is some reference we have been using.

We are aiming for an interesting contrasting color palette, with awesome effects and atmosphere. Below is Concept Art that we are using. It is currently a WIP, chances are it will be updated regularly. I am linking the concept art to my public drop box folder so whenever i save the file it will update in real time. Chances are if you look at it now, it will be different when you look at it again tomorrow.

Since this is a collab, we're playing off our strengths: Ryan will focus on the tech side of things while I focus on the 'art' and the two of us will meet somewhere in the middle. Collaborating like bosses.
PS:
Hope you two finish this time as well.
Good luck!
The art below is already old. A lot of the blobbiness around the intersection of the grassy top to the dirty/rocky underside is already fixed.
With that said, we are slowly working on this and here now is our latest.
The lighting is NOT indicative of our final scene. It's just a mash of colours and point lights to fill what we have. There's still a lot to do...
-Finish the sculpting the trees (thats the level 1 sub from mudbox in the scene)
-Tree leaves, burning and on fire
-foreground assets
-background assets
-lava flow and lava effects
-lighting
-post
So please don't take what you see in the scene too literally. We're working slowly on this and need to post progress for the contest and this is where we are: Very 'middle of the road'.
(looking good!)

Maybe leaves on the trees could be smaller? Kinda hard to feel the scale right now.
What kind of assets are you planning here?
Planning on implementing some direct x tesselaton stuff in ways you guys haven't seen yet, also going to have a transitional material that slowly burns off the bottom layer of leaves from the trees over time.
Screen shot sreally don't do this level justice at the moment.
I instantly associated ur project with this video, at 1:25 and up.
slightly nsfw
Looks very promising!
Not sure if the poly budget will allow it, but I think the trees could stand to be more 'Tim Burton-ish', where the stumps look more bonsai tree-ish.
Just more overall arches, and have the branches more angular, and feel like decrepid arms and limbs.
Just a few advices if you don't mind:
- Scale is really hard to read. And if it's not then it seems like those characters are going to take up a lot of that precious screen real estate
- Foreground stones look way too polished for me.
- Rougher foreground terrain with some stones(parallax?) and maybe a more interesting silhouette(a stump sticking out, turned over tree with massive roots?)?
- Maybe some depth biased alpha blend for the grass, to minimize those sharp intersections with terrain? Or you could always fix up the diffuse.
- some hangmen bbqing in the background?
- maybe rounder tree branches? those look a bit choppy right now.
Keep it up, guys, I'd really love to see what you end up with! Good luck
