[FIGHTER] Soul Calibur 2, Spawn, MortalJohn

I'm going to have a go at making a variation of Todd McFarlanes Spawn who appeared Soul Calibur 2 as an Xbox Exclusive next to the non-exclusive Necrid (another todd McFarlane Creation)

Todd has kind of already done my job with the ammount of times hes changed spawns costume so coming up with a good variation idea thats unique could be difficult, I mean heres just the small list of the variations already existing: Hellspawn, Angelspawn, Necrospawn, Omegaspawn, Pharoahspawn, Santaspawn, Commandospawn, Parkourspawn, Nightmarespawn, Medievalspawn... the list goes on...

But I'm placing some ground rules for myself so that he will still be strictly a fighter character.

1. Must have some variation of the axe he uses in Soul Calibur 2 as his main weapon "Agony" as soulcalibur was all about the melee weapons.

2. No Guns. while other fighters do allow guns, and spawn tends to be choc-full of them, SoulCalibur was a strictly no guns zone. His Ectoplasm Projectiles on the otherhand are another matter :P

3. Must be unique. No re-imagining based on those already done by McFarlane, thats cheating.

And with that I start working on my base mesh! Any thoughts, ideas, or design you guys can think of would be greatly apprieciated!

    You could make him go for more of a Street Fighter type character and make him karate/kung-fu spawn?

    I think that might be your biggest hurdle. So many toy lines with so many revisions of him. Good luck though, a new interpretation would be awesome to see.

    Well I've come up with 3 options.

    I could go the way of the overdone Tron Image, and make Tron Spawn
    which would be pretty epic green glowing lined spawn.

    I was also thinking making his axe into a staff and make him into a mage with his cape as a robe.

    Or female spawn was another idea I was thinking about even though I know there are many variations done of female spawn characters but I think I could vary the costume to make certain female features exude out alot nicer, pluse as I haven't done much in terms of female modelling It would be nice to have that in my repetorie.

    I'm going to do a lot of research on the idea before I post any models but any thoughts on my ideas so far would be nice guys, cheers!:)

    Just a few quick ideas for you to consider, These themes may have been done so you might want to check.

    Aztec Spawn, Caveman Spawn, Steampunk Spawn, Ghost Spawn, Chaos Warrior Spawn, Pirate Spawn, Demon Spawn, Frog Spawn. :D

    Caveman Spawn probablly goes completely against the whole bible mythos of the comics but what would Ghost Spawn look like!?! Just Opacity map the whole thing :P

    Chaos Warrior would be cool if but its basically Omegaspawn, plus frog spawn.... well necroplasm is green I geuss :D

    I'll be researching all pathways I believe this could go before I go about making even the basemesh, because I've learned that I need a really good understanding of what I want to create before I even start moddelling before I give myself the go ahead. I'll have some research images up soon. Thanks guys!

    *Edit* I've seen your works before, awesome stuff! Big fan, keep up the good stuff. ;D

    Here we start with the updates, made a costume concept finnally today, decided female is the way to go, plus this being based on Soul Calibur we just got to have her have giant ass boobs dont we fellas? So yeah, base mesh is already at 9k so I'm already feeling the stress of working to a tri budget... I'll be working on optimization later. CCs always apprieciated!

    Just overall female reference for the type of anatomy I'm going for, going to be working on the weapon today as modelling the body kind of drained me, I'll see what I come up with.

    Model for Agony Chain Mace Concept, the mace itself is hitting 1k tris, but that chain alone there is hitting 4k by itself right now, so i either need to find a better way to make a nice looking chain or just have less of it... the bauble on the end of it aswell needs to be redone as I'm not seeing it really fit with the whole motif.

    More large boob shots on their way soon :P

    Yes, chains are the devil. You are probably going to have to end up using alpha planes. The 4000 triangles are much better spent making the character itself look better.

    I'm not familliar with that exact term, im presuming its just having boxes with a type of opacity map, if you have any videos articles or tutorials referring to this it would be apprieciated, as Spawns got a lot of chains.

    Right testing out the costume ideas in 3D right now, somthing I like somthings I dont, I'm using cheap shaders to colour right now so I can see things more clearly like the skull vs the belt and so on, so no it isn't unwrapped at yet. I think I need to get rid of the left arm band for somthing cooler but I can't think what, I'll be adding the chains tommorw as I've gotten the chains tri count down by a 10th of what it was previously!

    This is where I could really use some help in terms of ideas or opinions so please open floor here guys :D Still a lot to do but I dont know where to take it...

    In addition I know theres need for a lot for more gloss/specualr on just the overal skin to have the tight "latex" feel of spawn but with the base materials its difficult to setup I'll have a hell of a lot more renders of her tommorw, hopefully with a head!

    I think you could push that - make the skull on the belt 3 or 4 or 5 times larger!

    I'd also try to get more of a curvy flow to the overall shape in the profile.

    Have a wee look at Bayonetta and Judge Death.
