i really like your reference and what you plan to do with the concept but atm i think the sculpt looks too blobbish
try to define more planes in the face
i did a quick paintover to show what i mean
maybe look at some bridgman reference, he has some clear breakdowns of planes in a face
Hum... man, are you following some kind of concept? It's hard to say something if you don't show us a direction. I think the model it's not bad, but it lacks personality.
Personally, I think that if you want to make an older version of Ryu looks interesting, you could go on a cartoonish approach. Take the things take make Ryu be Ryu and show them in an old fighter, that can't realize he is not young anymore, and still is trying to be the world finest.
I believe that would be good make some sketches, about situations with him. For example, he meeting with other fighters, he arguing about his principles, trying to be proud, even without his power... Something on this way. I hope this helps!
@jramauri: The idea of "old fighter that can't realize he is not young anymore" is exactly the one I follow, with a little twist. He keep trying to fight but he has become useless cause now he is weak and slow... until he encounters a real challenger so he discover is real weakness is the lack of interest in his rivals.
In that moment he can awake again his "Satsu no Hadou" so he overcome himself in a last spark of the fighter he was.
I'm a programmer seduced by the character design... I suposse that this is what makes me not follow a "classic approach". That is why I'm here and what I'm trying to fix, with the help of your comments & critics. I assure you that I'm not looking to people saying how wonderful my renders are. Instead, are post like yours what I want to receive exactly, cause I think this is what can make me better designer.
Enough talking. Design time: Faces... how time passed by Ryu, keeping his facial structure.
I think it's a good start, Viktor. Take some time to study his body expression too. Pictures like this, showing old man in action will help you to find good gestures and expression for your character.
Search for manga or cartoon old man too on web. They will give you good body proportions and stereotypes to work from. Good luck!
Shameful lack of real fighters on that ref board! Get some aging Mas Oyama, and old jigoro kano, and maybe jack dempsey in his later life.
The tiny haggard old man is not really the natural end for a big, strong dude. They usually just get bigger and less strong. Obviously there's plenty of room for stylization, but keeping reality in mind tends to lead to the best creativity.
@SupRore: I see your point, but I think that you are right if talking about old fighters or/and bodybuilders.
I want him old... extremely. Really old man, lets say over 80. Also, I never think in Ryu like a extremely muscular man. I mean: taking that the representation in the games are a exageratted one, I suposse that someone with the body mass of Sagat, Zangief or T.Hawk are Schwarzenneger, Stallone or Hulk Hogan, so someone Ryu or Ken style will be more likely Jean Claude Van Damme or Hugh Jackman in Wolverine.
As you say, I will study images of old fighters, karate masters, and, of course, the ones you say, specially Jigoro Kano, that I see is more like what I was thinking about.
Kanos an awesome example if you want a 'frail' old man who isnt actually frail, dude was a beast even in old age -- sure, he couldnt win a competitive fight anymore, but he could still nail techniques on huge dudes: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKauhMNJQ-E&feature=related[/ame]
Now he has become a sensei... He is retired from fighting, but when he is called to give a speech in his friend Ken's funeral (the last one that was still alive) he remembers that he made a promise to himself "while I can move a finger, I will fight" "The fight is everything". Returning home, he makes some calls, talks with some of his students and makes the inscription to his last fight... the new street fighter tournament... He is now ready to die... to die fighting
Hey Viktor, I like this idea very much! Ryu wearing this traditional japanese clothes is pretty cool, indeed.
By now I think he's too generic. It's an old man, with japanese clothes, not Ryu. I suggest you to make him a bit bigger and more muscular. After all he was a fighter his entire life. Proportion like Geese Howard, from Fatal Fury would be great:
And about the clothes, I suggest you no sleeves, like Ryuhaku Todo (Art of Fighting), but with ripped kimono, characteristic of Ryu.
I suggest that you mantain his old fighting gloves too. Maybe not entirely bald, but with some hair on the back of head... and barefoot.
And that is it. I'm glad to see how motivated you are. Keep it up, man!
Ok... taking account of Jramauri posts I'm giving two or three steps backwards... looking the whole picture...
It seems the main problem is I lost Ryu in my first approach and couldnt get him back, so... time to find ryu... I'm sculpting Super Street Fighter 2 intro Ryu, getting use to his face, his eyes, his expression, so I can make him older later.
I suposse I'll forget the whole "over 80" idea and aim for a more "fighting game character" with a "over 50" try.
Hey man! Since I'm watching your progress, please let me show you some pics of old and strong characters
First, Genryuusai Yamamoto from Bleach, and then, Kame Sennin from Dragon Ball. They are old, but strong dudes. Ryu is the tipical strong and respected fighter, so, he must show that if you are not trying to make a parody of him : )
Sorry for this ammount of images, and I hope you can find an way for your Ryu ^^

Right now I'm in "first pass"... entering into details later. Be assured I'll take your paintover into account

Weekend it's coming... time to retake my old ryu... let's see what the next days brings
Now I'm looking for a more serious approach...
