Cool! I love Angel and think she's a really underappreciated character, so it's great to see you do something with her. I'd love to hear about your concept/thought process though, the painting looks cool, but I don't really think there's anything recognisably "Angel" about her... Looking forward to updates though!
Jigsaw: thanks for the feedback, i'm afraid i don't know the character too well, hopefully i'll be able to add more of her character to the revamp.I'll write some more about the thoughts on the concept below. Maybe you could give me some imput on that if you have the time
About the character: When i started to design this character i kinda wanted to steer away from the overly sexualised skimpy clothed stereotype some (still kept the chest area prominent though ) and reimagine the character in a cyberpunkish future where combat sports have become more agressive and comercial events, my tought patterns were that in order to draw more audience to the events and viewers to the matches the sports would have to up the ante and become more agressive and brutal, maybe throw in some melee weapons, polymer armor to take the hits and cybernetic implants. basically a futuristic tournament of knights or something. I'd write more but i think i have to think about this some more and hopefully make the background story sound less like a 7th grader powerfantasy.
for the character itself, I'll reference the likeness of Olivia Wilde for the face but i'm not aiming for full likeness. The outfit will have different materials varying in texture and hue from metals to plastic and rubber. the look i'm aiming for is a combination of motorcycle gear, wetsuit, platemail and various other martial arts gear that look cool, the materials will have some wear but not overly damaged, mostly chipped paint and such.i'll prob. add a helmet and a weapon for the character too.
started sculpting the head, quick basemesh with rudimentary edgeloops sculpted a bit .Still much to do.
What do you think, should i over emphasize the forms to capture a more powerful normal map? I kinda would like to sculpt a more subtler forms to the face, but i'm affraid it wouldn't translate to normal maps too well...
I think the description of your concept sounds good, but looking at your drawing it just kind of reads as Mass Effect fanart, I think. Your character has a similar hairstyle and hair colour, but to me that's kind of where the similarities end. Angel is a Mexican wrestler with kind of a playful personality, and there's not much in your design that communicates that (though admittedly she doesn't exactly look Mexican in her original incarnation either), and nor are there many design elements that bring to mind her original look.
I don't think by any means that your design is beyond salvaging or anything like that, but if you want to invoke the original character I definitely think it needs work. Even just altering her proportions and stature could go a long way I think, but either way I'd really like to see some kind of visual element transfer over to your design.
Those are just my two cents on your interpretation of the character - regardless of how you approach it I think your work looks cool so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of it.
Thank you for taking the time to analyze the design, Jigsaw, it really rings true now that you said it. Kinda bummer because i kinda liked the design, but as you said there's not much to connect the concept to the original character, gonna have to rethink things, but oh well kill your darlings etc thanks for your honesty.
lowpoly base for the body and some sculpting, still heavily under construction. Please excuse the hand and the feet
Concept sculpt bout done, still need some rethinking on some areas, especially the arms and the hands &feet. threw in some greeble stamps (maybe too haphazardly) to indicate places i wanna detail.
