updated to have final image here at the top:
ok, finally settled on something.
Mu-12 (noel vermillion) from BlazBlue.
I'd thought about simply trying to replace the sword bits with sword/gun or just gun bits, then went somewhere completely different, SOUND.

I was really inspired by the pic for the soundtrack cover, where it's got Noel, and some sort of hardware with speakers shoved all over it. It, and the design for mu-12 came close to an idea I'd had in my head for almost a year now, but hadn't put to paper (which was itself inspired by 'we are in control' by Hybrid), so the chance to do it for this just seemed to gel.
What I've got so far is rather rough, I'm still sketching constantly, changing ideas (as you can see from the work I'm posting). I'm a bit concerned that the character itself isn't REenvisioned enough from the original, since most of it is simply an amalgam of all 3 forms of noel/mu-12, input here would be nice. Also thinking I'm gonna play with the colours a bit, since I want to keep it recognizable, but be different from the original scheme, input here would be nice too.
I'm also wondering about adding a guitar of some sort, but I'm concerned it's not 'fighty' enough.
rough sketching:
and my current concept
RE Colors - I think re-imagining them would be good, but white is so slick you should keep that.
Comparing reference to your concept, I feel like the tie is missing, or that the diamond at her neck should be red.
You mentioned a guitar. What if you made the inside of the speaker-swords into a fret board?
I also feel like she's missing the flowy bits around her waist, whether its a skirt or a cape.
Hope that helps.
anyway, I do have something today.
got most of my concept sorted out, gonna tweak some details as I go, but if I don't start modeling now, I never will, and it's already a bit late.
I'm pretty happy with the 2 main speaker bits behind her, but the small gun/speaker/sword bits are going to change. Still hoping to have some time soon to go through colour variations.
still unsure what it's final orientation will be. I keep rotating it and finding new ways for it to work/not work
in the pic at the top of this thread.
With all round edges, it reminds me of a painter's pallet.
And the protruding horns are throwbacks to 60's animation
(The beetles or Monty Python)
Maybe instead you should add some flat edges?
Not lots, but some.
(like the 3 o'clock object has a barrel)
The subwoffer might look great as a single cannon,
instead of appearing on each speaker cluster?
Aspects of the speaker cluster could be transparent to
give the impression that they are 'force generated'
rather than heavy solid objects?
Back to the thread's top image,
Do the 'wings' at 7 o'clock
remind you of organ pipes?
I look forward to see the result !
feeling very scatterbrained making this, running in all directions at once.
getting more familiar with zbrush finally (aka, still sucking at it)
not even sure what it is, as I've replaced many of the parts, and I still get nothing
hooray expensive delays! (<--sarcasm)
too much trying to get it to a point I'd like to show instead.
however, now I do actually have something I'd like to show for once!
wtb crits, don't care if they're mean.
oh yeah, and I'm hoping to add some sort of electric guitar sword, if I have time, which I don't think I do :P
Keep up the good work, i have a feeling this one will come together nicely when textured.
and yeah, with how much time is left, I'm hoping I can even finish texturing
Wishing I'd gotten more feedback, or well, any forum activity at all :P
thx to Kendo for being my one unsolicited criticizer!
