Riggin some kind of dino

I'm doing a dino rig for my animation showreel and would like some feedback before i start rigging.

Any tips like where to place certain joints, and how to change joints to fit my purpose is very welcome,- I was planning to use a skeleton generator (like in the pic) but if someone simply has a good tip on a tutorial for rigging a dino from scratch that would be great as well.

I'm not that read-up on rigging, but my teacher said "Imagine the spine, arms and legs, and there you go." Dunno if it's all correct, sounds logic tho. Same goes for the skinning.

Yes i guess thats a good start. Ive tried thinking like that in earlier rigs but there is always some things that get strange deformation when i have my joints close to the skin, and sometimes it gets weird when the joints are in the middle. Thanks for your reply though

Might try a couple of helper bones just for weights. Not sure what package you are using, maya it looks like?
