My new(!) computer is staring to fuck up. When i start it the screens doesn't get any signal from my graphics card and it's always at the same point in the startup process.

I've tested all the different drivers there is and the only difference i get is that on the 256 driver, the screen turns black, and on the 266 driver the screen freezes. Again on the same place.

Right now i'm using it with the "built in" drivers form win7. I can surf and.. Eum, listen to music. I'm going fucking crazy.

Any ideas you guys? The nerd tech forum i hang out on can't figure it out.

The computer is this:

Intel i7 2600k 3.6 Ghz
Corsair 2*4 Gb
nVidia 460 GTX 768 Mb
Crucial C300 SSD 64 Gb
ASUS P8P67 PRO
Win7 64 Pro

Could be the power supply. Either it doesn't have enough wattage or its starting to die. Try unplugging anything unnecessary, other hard drives, DVD drive etc... and see if that changes anything.

Windows may have logged a error during the freeze that could be helpful. Look in the Event viewer for any messages with red "!"'s

    Control Panel>>System and Security>>Administrator tools>>Event Viewer

Then click on the Windows Logs menu to the left and look through the sections under there for any Error messages that look like they could be graphics related.

This sounds familiar... I just installed Nvidia 266.58 a day or so ago. I was using 198 or something like that previously.

When I start up my PC and Vista starts to load it gets to the horizontal animated bar thing then goes black for a while.

Sometimes it makes it to the log in screen but the resolution is set to built in Windows default drivers and my Nvidia drivers and control panel are missing.

When it doesn't make it to the log in screen and I do a hard reset then tell it to "Start Windows Normally", it does make it to the log in screen but again the resolution is set to Windows default driver settings and my Nivida drivers and control panel are missing.

If at that log in screen I click the red shutdown button and tell it to restart, then I get to the log in screen and my resolution is back to normal and the Nvidia control panel is present when I right click the desktop.

I figured the new drivers somehow didn't install correctly and was planning to go back to an older version, so far I've been too lazy to download/uninstall/reinstall though.

I also thought perhaps I might have some crazy virus or something but scans showed nothing.

I guess I'm not the only one with this problem, time to go back to an old driver.

    RMA the 460
I had this happen to my first 460. All is good now.
They ran me through a number of steps for uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers, but when I confirmed that didn't happen, that puppy had to go.

It's not your fault... just keep telling yourself that.

Nothing. It's just the kernel power somethig something that shows up. And that's cause i need to hard boot it when it freezes.

Like xenoBond said, this is a 460 problem. I've just bean reading worlds largest nVidia thread about it. It can be found here

The new drivers, from 258, comes with the possibility to to a "clean install". It removes the old drivers. And yeah, you should switch to win7 dude :P

Did you contact the store or the manufacturer? Any how, it's kinda ennoying. I'm in Germany with a Taiwan card bought in Sweden.

Do i really need to let him go? He's cute :(

Yeah, you start to wonder. And nVidia haven't done anything about it. It's bean known for like 6 moth or something. The same problem is on the whole 400 and 500 series.
