Ok now I amrealy confused I have been using 3dsmax for a while but since autodesk acquired Maya I am wondering what's the point of keeping developing two different tools that do the same stuff instead of merging them ?
Whats actually the main differences between the two? Shoul dI switch and start learning Maya ? Is it easier to do things with?

Actually speaking - everything depends on what is your work and what king of workflow your company uses. Maya is mostly a perfect solution for cinematic tasks while Max is often used by architects, designers and game developers. Softimage is something in between them ) But I find its modeling tools muuuuch more powerful than Max's or Maya's ones. Also Softimage is really fast to my mind.
So these product don't compete with but supplement each other. Many companies prefer using two packages of choice rather than work with only one solution.

Don't know how you managed to get no results on your search.. What keywords did you use?
In all seriousness just get Modo and be done with it
And yeah, both Softimage and Modo seams to 100 times better. But worst of all, i have to is 3Ds max
I think that's already their current plan. The $6.5k premium suite includes Softimage, Motionbuilder, and Mudbox, along with your choice of either Max or Maya. And all the new 2011/2012 features seem to include 1-click transfers between these programs. So why give Maya or Max something like FaceRobot or ICE for free when you can push them to buy another license. Works like this:

(Likewise, I don't see Softimage getting the fancier viewport renderings as a result
