Does anyone have good examples/tutorials of how to render a sub'd model in max in a good way. So it looks awesome and all of the detail is shown clearly.
I have a video about it on Cg.tutsplus, in the Hotrod series, and an even better way is explained on my Dozer DVD (Dozer renders are really a big cut above the hotrod stuff, honestly).
Laurens's tutorial is really really nice. I would definitely get it.
1 little minor thing that bugged me about it and its TINY, was him saying passes need to be manually saved. if you set a render output path for the beauty, then max automatically saves the files for you. You just need to make sure your hitting render and not doing a render preview.
If it's for a single render I still prefer to have a look at all of them before I save anything. For animation I definitely set it to output paths. Guess my wording might have come off a bit wrong there. If you're new to passes I'd say it's better to have a look at each of them at least, so you know what you're saving, instead of ending up with a bunch of files in a directory you've never seen before.

There's a section on high poly half way down.
