Yes they were rendered from mental ray.
I am almost 99% sure that was from a real world replica that was made and not an actual 3d model. Although you definitely have a point about that though. I am hoping I can make just if not more kick ass though.
For now this is the hi poly but I will be making it into a low poly. And the gun is being done for a contest btw.
jordan.kocon - thanks for the encouragement
here is what I worked on the most
the back piece I had to model in the shape flat then bend and put a smoothen of 1 on it and the weld my seams. So I showed the mesh before had. I might got back and remodel not exactly happy with it but it works for now.
Cool, looks like that wouldn't work - but apparently it does
An other solution for you back piece would be to throw a lot more geo on there. Like a cylinder with 64 sides or something. Easier to get the hard edges with the round shape that way.
Looks cool, keep em comming!(:
I try not only because even for something like that 64 I think I would have still had to cut things in but this way. I choose the geo that I need, but yeah.
The main piece I forgot to mention was done almost the same way but i didnt have to collapse the smooth version . I could just smoothen by 3 and then bend. So that piece still has a preserved stack and will be good to use when I unwrap it.
thanks again
Here is a bolt I just got finished for the gun. Finishing up all those little parts this weekend.
