Where do you find Jobs?

I've always thought how people found these jobs when I was in school. I am sorry if its a repeat thread too... I wanted to post in here some of the more popular resources I've used for freelance and jobs. Also I've noticed Game and Film job postings are often crossing over each other...

I know I swing mostly to animation (I am an animator after all) but I think this gives everyone a good idea of job websites. Honestly, from this group, most other job postings are referenced or cross posted. That is you'll see duplicates on other websites.

Did I miss any? Let me know, add them in here. I hope this helps you all. Are there some European, Oceanic or Indian resources? I have no idea, but if there are, throw them in here too.

Also, don't /ever/ pay for those job boards that have "private" postings. There are may around, even have subscriptions just to sign up and see the jobs. I've done it a couple of times and honestly, they either link directly to one of these forums or out right copy and paste it. Has anyone else had luck that I didn't with them?

www.gamesindustry.biz - got my job though this. mostly recruiters there (some really good, others not so...). with some digging it's also not too difficult to find out the studios behind those posts, if you want to contact them directly.

    linkedin!

Yeah, sign up to a few groups on LinkedIn and you'll have more job ads than you'll know what do do with.

For Australia and New Zealand folks, The DLF (Digital Labourers Federation. No, I don't know either) mailout is your best bet. I recommend only signing up to the jobs mailout or you'll wind up with hundreds of emails of mindless drivel every day.

    There's also www.Tsumea.com
Make sure you look at the jobs page as the ones that appear on the front page are only "sponsors jobs".

When I was in school and looking for a job I just thought about what studio's I liked from a game perspective and studio culture and applied to those studios. Pretty much just went to game studio's websites and checked to see who was hiring and applied to the studios I wanted to work for.

Then after I finished up Halo Reach a bunch of the Environment Artists there recommend me to studios they worked at previously once it became clear they wouldn't be able to keep me any longer. Didnt even have to apply which was pretty sweet ha :)

I would suggest applying to studios that you would really like to work for the most. Even if it is a long shot it doesn't hurt to apply. Then once they all reject you start trolling Game Dev Map for open positions.

Out of curiosity, I started browsing for a few Environment Artist positions. The 'entry level' positions seem almost nonexistent; most requiring 3+ years in the industry or a shipped title. Spectacular motivation for an environment artist working on his portfolio!

There's always exceptions to those requirements if your folio is really good.

The main reason they're there is to keep total newbs from even applying because nobody likes their HR getting swamped with crappy applications which they forward to the art leads (they hate wasting their time with crappy folios too). So instead of HR sorting people out, people sort themselves out preemptively (now if that's a good thing is debatable). But if your folio is really kickass (get some opinions from fellow Polycounters), many companies will lower the requirements considerable just to get a kickass talented artist.

Seriously being a whore sometimes :p

But nah in all seriousness , Ive never had luck in the past with the whole process of emailing a company going through HR and dealing with there nonsense, all my jobs came from either knowing people at the company /directly being in email conversations with them. Or literally knocking down there doors and showing up.

Not the best way to approach it but as you get on in years in this field you meet people and realise everyone works somewhere at one point and will know the backdoor/window/skelleton key into that X/Y/Z company.

Polycount has landed me almost every job I had but one. And the awesome community of people here have been some of both my respected peers/work associates/ and friends who have helped time and time again when on the hunt for da J-0-B.

Just aim at a studio, study the studio, mail a couple of artists from there, ask how the workflow / pipeline is, practice a bit, then ask HR or a Lead artist from there if they're looking for someone, if so you'll be given a art test.
All you'd need to do is prove yourself after that.

A good network is also important, linkedin, polycount, etc. :)

Awesome responses guys. Seforin I agree, it's all about workin the streets...

Actually knocking on someone's door is how I got my first job. I literarily walked to a studio some blocks away from my Uni and knocked on their door. Said I just graduated and was available. That lead to 7 months of animating ;D

As for Job Fairs, I haven't had any luck with those directly. Meeting people and getting their contact info is great though. Plus 9 times out of 10 they said "apply online." Mmmm :)

The first job I took had those same requirements and I got it anyways.

If you can compete with someone who has 3 years experience, then apply. If you can't, then you're not really good enough yet anyways and you should roll more time into your portfolio.
