3DS Max Axis movement reversed?

Howdy folks,

First post here but bit of a lurker.

I was wondering if you could help. I'm rigging a character for our film in college and Max has decided it wants to mess me around. I'm setting up the IK but when I move it it reacts in reverse of what it should. Here's what I mean:

This is when I move the IK control towards the body

And this is what happens when I move it away.

I was actually having a similar problem when setting up a biped for another character: Drag the z axis control to scale and it would scale on the x axis, etc. I just worked around that because the rig itself turned out fine. This however I can't work through.

It's really annoying cause I know there's an easy bloody fix for it.
