Help with tree's

Hey all, I was just wondering if anyone could help me make tree's like the ones in Battlefield Heroes?

Mainly stuck on how they did the leaves

Aren't those just a billboard? Planes are always facing the camera so all you need to do is paint a nice texture.
Obviously you need an engine that supports billboard to test your trees.

Be warned tho, that's a very last gen technique. Nowadays you see more and more proper modeled tree foliage.

Ah right so its one big billboard? Or 2 intersecting ones?

And yeah I know its quite an old technique, but it gives the style of tree that I'm looking for, or would a similar style be possible with newer techniques?

I believe it's many billboards, you can sort of pick out individual clumps of leaves.

Ah yeah I see the clumps now.

How would I go about paiting leaves like that? I've tried a few ways but I cant get anything that nice?

you could make some brushes that you can use to make branch clumps. imo it will just take practice and time to get your stuff looking the way you would like.

also like to add that you could get some nice variations by fully understanding how to control the brushes you make.
