Hi guys. Just thought I'd share some music with you that I love working to. I can't seem work without it and these 2 songs have kept me going lately...help to get over the christmas comedown too. .
One thing I always find really really helps me is to find music relating to the project I'm working on, wherever possible. For example, if I'm working on a Warcraft inspired scene, then the Warcraft soundtrack... or one project I did a while back was a scene from Naruto, and I had the Naruto soundtrack on repeat. It's actually surprising how much it seemed to help me focus and get inspired.
Other than that, I usually find lounge/ambient electronica is amazing for if I'm painting/sketching, and if I'm pushed for time, or rushing to get a project done, some metal/hardcore usually kicks my ass into gear.
I tend to listen to a lot of video game music.. but the one i listen to the most i guess is Silent Hill... all of them, and when i am in a rush any abba hahaha
Sometimes i just play random. But mostly video game music and silent hill
i am looking forward to looking at what other people listen tho, im always interested in new music that i might not know.
Depends on the atmospehere. I tend to use fast heavy music to work fast. i fall into the beat and work in time. I've been listening a little to the stones after playing black ops.
I jump around a lot, from laid back beatles, melancholic alternative rock, laid back ambient lounge, angry joyful rock, energized dance, focussed classical or crazy euro trance or retro acid house techno... whatever the mood, whatever the demands of the work
For working, I generally stick to electronic stuff or orchestral soundtracks. If it has lots of lyrics I can sometimes find myself getting pretty distracted by them.
I like trance/dance/electronica/techno music that has vocals in it. I find just beats alone don't really work for me i need to have some sort of vocals in it otherwise i get bored of the music and spend way to much time trying to find another song rather than working

Seriously though I mostly listen to podcasts while working. Also thanks to Stoofoo I now associate most fast paced indie rock/electric songs with sculpting in Zbrush.
It seems like a lot of people in this thread like soundtracks and for that I offer up this remix of Ennio Morricone's "Ecstasy of Gold" and dare you not to become motivated:
Most of the time I wear a headset to keep myself close out to the world when modelling and compositing a scene, but it hurts the ears after a while.
So the songs I listen is mostly soundtracks from games, Check out the Ost From:
- Amon Tobin, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. ( Takes alot to Appreciate that. )
- Mirror's Edge =] , (love it)
- Halo >=] ( ok this might Distract me for a while, lol)
- Assassins Creed 2 (Ezio's Family track and Wetlands Escape track)
- Beyond Good And Evil ( This is not a game, THIS IS AN EXPERIENCE !!!. listen to Home sweet Home, it is aww inspiring.)
- BioShock (scarry!)
If you want music not dealing with games try:
-Darft Punks's Latest OST from Tron Legacy
-"Battle without honor or humanity"
-"Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence" (The Original one and nothing else)
-Coldplay's Clocks (Feels surreal to me)
All of the above are some of my compilation of the best mood inducing songs there is. My thanks for the composers that created these works of art.
It seems like a lot of people in this thread like soundtracks and for that I offer up this remix of Ennio Morricone's "Ecstasy of Gold" and dare you not to become motivated:
Usually I doI do, but when I have a tough time artistically, I occasionally find this to be true. It's a subconscious thing, that your mind can only focus so much creativity, and that a lot of it is swallowed up in the music you listen to.
Makkon i saw that strip in my animation class. Every time my music is too distracting for my work I think of that, but i'll be damned if i have to do art for the majority of time without music.
While working I commonly listen to a lot of those bands within the "core" genres, hardcore, grindcore, mathcore, etc...
I don't really listen to them much outside of working though. I think it's because while working, I like to listen to something I can ignore, and I can ignore that kind of music, but still enjoy it.
a much much much better version of the same track, if you don't mind skipping the first 60 seconds... there's a part later on where everything just stops, and out of nowhere, massive foghorn...
first time i heard it was in a nightclub, completely off my rocker, and the "silence" seemed to last forever until "BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM" total win.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiMl_6EsVcg[/ame]
it's weird though, that only works for modeling/sculpting. for texturing i listen to stuff like dream theater haha.
I've been listening to alot of old game music. Back when sound quality was generally pretty bad. So, composers had to put emphasis on the melody! Such great times, very nostalgic as well!
All I ever listen to in this world is game music or anime. Donkey Kong, Zelda, Mass Effect, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, Assassin's Creed, Mirror's Edge, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Trigger Resurrection, Devil May Cry 3, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid 1, KOTOR 1 and 2, Prince of Persia Warrior Within, No More Heroes, Half Life 1 / 2, Final Fantasy 7,8,9 and finally Zone of the Enders 1 / 2.
Why do I listen to game music only? Cause my understanding of music and philosophy is this, if I have an immersive experience with it then it's good music. When I listen to these songs my mind drifts and I see another world far more interesting than the one I'm living in. It's an odd feeling and I see lots of other people who experience the same thing especially when listening to old songs like Aquatic Ambience from Donkey Kong 1.
I sometimes debate whether I'd ever enjoy games if they didn't have the music that made them what they were.
As ror said, it really depends on what's the task ahead vs. what's the mood. There's a music for every mood.. but for me it's almost always psychedelic... gotta keep them neurons busy :P
From light to heavy...
Usually I doI do, but when I have a tough time artistically, I occasionally find this to be true. It's a subconscious thing, that your mind can only focus so much creativity, and that a lot of it is swallowed up in the music you listen to.
That's all well and good but music beats the noise of people talking and walking around the office.
Often I listen to Ragnarok Online background music while I work. I've already heard it a million times while grinding away on the MMO, but they are all fairly different, there's so many tracks, and nostalgia has a bit to do with it.
So many more...xilent, KUNG, Mr Sizef & Unquote, Stranjah, Fierce & Break etc etc etc
Nitewalkr: Np man, welcome... its just the tip of the iceberg - youll be rolling to D&B in no time!!
KevinJohnston: Your post brings back so many rave scene memories... epic dude!!!!
So surprised to see so many electronic music partakers here... tis awesome, linking more goodies for specific times.
I do like the darker side of Hard Trance... Jon The Baptist & Chuck E, Dark By Design / Steve Hill hit the G spot every time! Hard, dark and driving evil shit!
I'm all over the place, my library is a rats net of just about everything. I really like using grooveshark's radio feature and just let it wonder around. I'll create a playlist and sift through it later using pieces as jumping off points for other radio sessions or just go buy some of it.
That's all well and good but music beats the noise of people talking and walking around the office.
For the most part I agree with Richard Williams & Milt Kahl especially for what they did, 2D animation. The brain power it takes to do their job to the level that they did, is just amazing. It's something that even completely competent artists that are fully focused can't pull off. Kahl once said he didn't have any interest in drawing unless it was moving, it was always about the motion. How many of us would be happy just to be able to draw one frame at his level?
Unless you're doing something that you have down so well that it can't be improved or something that runs on so little brain power it won't matter, solitude can be a powerful tool. But like all skills it has to be honed and not ignored.
I have some really nice noise canceling headphones when I really need to dive into things I put em on with nothing playing. In addition to not being sucked into casual conversations, it also acts like a urban duck blind, unless I stand up and start shooting, people tend to keep flying right on by.

I think that a lot of people have trouble sitting still in a quite room, they're uncomfortable with silence"gotta do something" "gotta listen or watch something" twitch twitch... its almost as if they're scared of their own thoughts or that "nothing" would drive them insane? Seems like they always want to get away from themselves instead of embracing the silence, tapping into it and using it. Those same people have epiphanies when they're stuck in the can, on a train or in a cab or trying to fall asleep. It's gotten harder to get stuck in those moments with the raise of hand-held media but I think its important to use the solitude as a secret weapon. Now just imagine what you're brain would cook up if it wasn't busy dropping a deuce and had more time?
A little deprivation can unlock some very awesome, creative things. Some of the most creative people in the world prefer to work in solitude. Authors have writers shacks, artists lock themselves in their studios for days bla bla bla.
I'm not saying everyone needs to unplug I sure as hell don't. But I don't think we should be so quick to dismiss solitude, focus and clarity.
While I don't actually particularly like it, I find metal really helps me focus when I'm working, particularly if I'm tired which tends to be a lot of the time. I usually just pull up the Triple J Full Metal Racket cast and listen to that. I'd probably struggle to name any bands - it's all blends into background noise.
Pretty much anything by "Grouper" (Only a recent find)
Also:
Alessi's Ark
Anna Ternheim (A lot of it. Very relaxing stuff)
Emily Wells
Alina Orlova
Emilie Autumn (I can't explain why it relaxes me)
George Harrison
And so many others. I mainly only listen to relaxing music.

Either techno-y stuff like Infected Mushroom or Fluke when doing mindless/repetitive tasks. Been listening to this a lot recently :P
Or chillout stuff like EVE Online OST, Bluemars Cryosleep radio, Aire Freshener 2.0, Bohren und der Club of Gore... background noise, really.
All mixed up occasionally with stoner rock and blues.
