rendering trouble

so at the moment im rendering this pokeball, with a gold stand if you like, and the pokeball renders fine but i cant seem to get the black to disappear from the stand.

the stand is ment to be gold, but its not rendering gold at the front.

im using vray 1.5 and 3ds max 2010, i have 2 vray lights in and im using a vray camera, and i have had trouble with the stand rendering it before testing it with the pokeball and no material on the stand. what would happen is the last row of polygons on the stand would rendering all weird, as in like a 'crazy colour', shown below:

this thing only seems to happen to the last rows of polygons in this image above, but in the first image, the entire thing is black :|

ive tried moving lights around and adding lights, but it still goes black, any ideas?

any help would be appreciated :)

also how do you think it has turned out so far? im thinking of modelling something in the background instead of this boring image :) everything else look sounds though?
