J. Scott Campbell was one of my favorite comic book artists so I had been wanting to make a 3d model in his style for a while now. Sydney Savage is a character from his Danger Girl comic that was around about a decade ago (saying that makes me feel old).
I started this for the Comicon Challenge, but didn't finish in time (I went over the specs anyway). 15788 triangles (including the weapons), and 2048 x 2048 textures for diffuse, normal, and specular. I also went overboard with an alpha to soften the eyelashes a bit, a tangent/direction map for the hair highlights, and a subtle map for SSS. It's definitely not as optimized as it could be!
Sculpted in Zbrush, poly modeling in Maya, textures in Photoshop & BodyPaint, real-time render in Marmoset Toolbag.
Looking back on it, I could have done a lot more with the textures. I suppose I never really committed to any particular direction... But it's done with! Of course I'd still love to hear what can be improved for future models.
You can check out the original, rather embarrassing, GA progress thread here:

I don't know how to embed a video here, but here's the Vimeo link to the turntables:

I'm kind of new to this Vimeo stuff... for some reason the video is lower res than the original.
Oh, yea- I should mention that I'm pretty sure Sydney does not use a Desert Eagle gun in the comics, but her partner, Abbey Chase, does so I went ahead and made one. I have little knowledge of guns and couldn't tell what kind she uses.

gunning for another showcase spot?
oh and,
Dat ass!
Lots of sexy girls in tight leather lately. ^^
You nailed the hip torso transition which is a bit of a trademark for Mr Campbell. I'm glad you didn't go drastically over the top on the rack either.
My only beef is that it seems you have a lot of polys in some areas that don't really need them and kind of sparse in other areas like the top of the head and maybe even the elbows and knees. But the kind of optimization I'm looking at can be done by collapsing loops and rings without effecting the UV's or the silhouette, so it really doesn't matter that much.
Awesome piece of work! Very much looking forward to seeing more.
Have you seen the storyboard pages about the videogame they were trying to make ? super cool stuff.
shrew81: Haha, the first one seemed like a fluke. There's a lot of good stuff out there that I think deserves to be in the showcase.
crazyfool: I never found a way to create those maps with conventional applications. I cheated a bit and used something created by our graphics programmer here at work. Basically what it does is lets you draw lines indicating the direction the hair is flowing and then generates the map from that. It's got some limitations, but worked a lot better than me painting it by hand.
Torch: Yea, I keep telling myself to try out 3dCoat someday.
Mark Dygert: Thanks, I totally know what you're saying about the poly distribution.
Pior: Oh, yea, I have the Sketchbook that has those storyboards in it. Really cool stuff. It's too bad the game itself wasn't so great looking, but I guess that's me looking back on PS1 limitations.
By the way, I heard there was a Danger Girl movie in the works. I hope they don't screw it up.
that suit looks extremely uncomfortable lol but I doubt that matters
great job
think she should get that mole checked out by a dermatologist though.... looks questionable :P
Let me ask our programmer and see if he's got a version that can be made public. There are some limitations with it, but maybe if it's available and their are a lot of people giving feedback then it would be encouragement for him to develop it further.
You really nailed the style. This one is going straight to the folder of awesome art. Great job. I would have to agree with Firebert. I think the only problem with the mole on her left breast is that it is a bit too red and the blur around the edge makes it look a bit infected. Perhaps Remove the blur and darken it up a bit, maybe add another one or two smaller ones on her chest neck or face. I made a little paint over. Just a few changes to hue saturation and added some freckles. Pointless changes really, hardly even noticeable but I did it.
Duncan, I like the coloration you added to the face, but I'm not sure I like the imperfections and noise that was added. It seems to break from the simplified style. Also clear skin and perfect teeth are hallmarks of youth. You toss too many imperfections in there and it starts to age the character.
Congrats on a wicked bit of art!
I also thought the blur would settle the mole in a bit more, but it's definitely not a good thing if it's coming across as a malignant growth or something.
It's gotta Pixar type feeling.
Love the face.
so, will she get some nice boob physics
Update on the tangent/direction map utility: Our graphics programmer agrees that it would be cool to release publicly in some form, but we need to get it cleared with the folks in charge here. I'll keep you guys posted if it becomes available!
