Photoshop: Smudge Tool in Individual Channel. (Normal Map Cleanup)

Anyway to get a smudge tool to work in a individual channel? Barring that workarounds. The only one I can think of is make a copy of channel as alpha smudge away. Select it and have the rgb channel you wanted again alone and fill with white.

PITA and you cant see your results right away.

Any other ways you guys do it?

Just cleaning up vertice misses and what not.

Unfortunately per channel smudging doesn't work in cs5.

Using CS4 so I can't troubleshoot.
Try hiding the other channels while you smudge.

I know this reply is a bit late, but...I still use cs4 and was having the same problem with being unable to smudge in the channels for normal map manipulation. All you have to do is select the RGB channel and hide the other channels you do not want to smudge. You should then be able to smudge on a single channel. Hope that helps.

Bump: I think this is because you don't have a locked background layer underneath. You can have sample all layers ticked and it'll work on a layer above the flattened, locked layer but it will not work without one. If all your layers are floating it won't work.
