Yup. There are a few ways to do it, but I think this way is the easiest:
1. Make a camera and place it in a reasonable spot. I forget the "average" eye height of a man, but try to keep that in mind.
2. With your camera still selected, go to "Utilities" panel and hit the "More" button.
3. Select "Panorama Exporter" from the list.
4. The rest is pretty self explanatory
Given you want Spherical Environment Maps and no Cubemaps in 3DS Max, you need Mental ray, then do as follows:
1.)go to Rendering -> Render Setup -> Renderer.
2.)Scroll down to the camera shaders and asign a "WarpAround (Lume)" Shader to the "Lens" slot.
3.)Adjust your render Resolution and render. The center of your Sphere will be where your camera/viewport is.
Can' t say if it is desortion free enough for you, that is just how a spheres texture is at the poles
