New Project

Hi guys, I got some great feedback from the small mini project that I put up, so I'm posting a larger project that I'm about to undertake. Its basically the image on the bottom right with the house on the bottom left with the windmill attached to it from the middle top house.

Here are the images as well as a block out of the stuff that's in progress, any help and assitance, any thing that you'd like to see closer, just lemme know, I value your feedback and hope to make this my best project yet!

Guys I've been working away at this for a little while now, bujt I'm not really happy with some of the modeling. Also I think the concept for the house wasn't the best. So I actually decided to change the concept that I'm going to use. Here is how far I've gotten this far:

The internet in this cafe is weird, so here's a link just in case the images aren't working:

nice block out. theres a few things i think you could change/improve. Your fence/rocks/tree are very organic, as well as the houses in your reference. But your house is very squared and cleaned hard surface.

One thing you can start is to just tessellate your terrain and paint in some undulation, and build your houses foundation a little organic, and start there.

And last thing, a very small thing, your lamp feels out of place. Its very Victorian city street like, and your setting is more of a farm house. That one fable shot has what im talking about, it has a home made stand that you can hang a lantern from. Anyways, just an idea.

Hi spahr, thanks so much for the critiques! I actually made some changes to the house, before I read your critique. Anyways I wasn't very happy with the modeling of the house, and a friend of mine suggested a different piece of concept art for modeling the house. I'm including some screenshots of my new work, if its not working please let me know, I'm going to make some changes to the lamp, and probably try to make it more of a sign/lamppost (sign post?), so please go ahead and make some critiques and I'll try to make it look better.

Here are some more updates for the modeling that I've finsihed, I've started to get into texturing, but I still have to make that lamp post look more "countryish."

At first it looks a little blocky but if you really look at it you can tell you have been going for detail.Looks like you worked from the ground up.The roof is a little flat for me but then theres alot of differnt type of tiles you could put up there.Tree and lite look great.Maybe a balcony would pop out the sides a little.Terrain seems a little flat but no biggie.
  • pbot
Yeah I haven't really gotten into the ground yet, but I'm going to add grass and stuff and some terrain to make it cool, basically the modeled stuff that you see is really what I'm focusing on, but in a little while, I'll put up some textures to show you where I'm at.

I've started doing some work on the base texturing, here's how its looking so far:

I was really hopeing you were going to hand paint it.
Id work on the roof a little more it seems to flat.Look at the concept art and youll see its not flat.
Come on pbot this could be much better.

Made some updates to it, I tried to fix up the roof, and have added more textures to the trees leave and some plants, and a little bit to the rocks.

Right now it looks like you definately have some scaling issues. The roof tiles are too large. That rock in front is massive. You really should paint your textures or take the time in PS so they don't look too photosourced. Your house looks bland even though the concept has so much interest. Add some shadows between the wood post. Give it a bit of grunge and wear. Give the edges of the wood some wear and scale down the wood grain texture a bit. I would say that right now you can go overboard with the grunge and detail even, and tone it down later if you have to. Your tree leave textures can use a bit of love and contrast. The alpha maps need more detail and will look something like this one. Overall it just needs that extra bit of work going in here.

thanks guys, the textures aren't finished yet, but I'm working on putting in way more plants as well as grunge, and clearly in the render, some of the textures are still not working yet. I'm actually working on plants and grunge textures today, and I'll be putting them in the scene, definitely check it out, as this feedback makes my stuff stronger.

Hey guys, the project isn't really going as well as I had planned, and there are numerous corrections that need to be made to get this thing looking better, and my teacher told me to finish this one up and begin working on my next piece now. I'm wrapping up this piece, and I've taken many of your helpful critiques to heart. I'll post up my next work on the thread and I'll aim not to repeat the same mistakes as this one. For now here's the final product:
