Sup guys,
i saw this video about this new(?) feature in Zbrush called MatchMaker Brush. You can use it for forming one surface to the contours of another.

I already did similar things in max with the Bend- ,Path Deform- and FFD-modifier but this worked only on simple shapes. Is there some way or maybe a modifier in max that can bring me the same result like in the picture?

havent tried it but it might work. (am using maya at work atm or id test it
If it doesn't work. Grab TexTools, and use the UV/3D Swap to create a flat version of the chest plate.
Skinwrap the detail mesh to it and morph it back into shape.
You might need to actually create morph targets and morph it that way I don't know how well it would handle the transition back from 3D to UV as I think the mesh actually changes. But should work fine.

As Mark said use TexTools UV/3D Swap for the "flatening" mentioned in the tutorail. (I'm affraid of sculpting, I love this tutorail :O)
Edit: The rest of the "Pandicarus" tutorial series is in the wiki
