Female swashbuckler type character

Hello all!

After a long time of browsing these forums i have decided to teach myself to count polygons, which i am finding a very daunting task :) I am doing this by diving headfirst into Maya.

Below you will find my first serious attempt at making a 3d character model; a concept for a female swashbuckler type character and a base mesh that i am working with to practice the basics of modeling, animation and uv/texturing.
Before I advance into detailing any tips and tricks i could improve upon would be greatly appreciated.

Also, do any of you have a good link on maing more realistic hair (layers and alpha channels)?
