you need to wrap the [ img ] tag into a [ url ] one, like this:
so you get something like this:

regarding the interface stuff, I had the same years ago, just go to your message settings: http://www.polycount.com/forum/profile.php?do=editoptions
scroll down to the bottom to "Message Editor Interface" and change it to: "Enhanced Interface: FULL WYSIWYG Editing"
You can also use just the WYSIWYG interface. Use the "Insert Image" button, then select the image and click the "insert link"button to add a link to your image.
