obviously its not "rage on an iphone". how will it play? the description says its "on rails". is it just a few missions where you shoot up some mutants?

It's on rails, but more freedom than other rail shooters (you can pan the view around instead of just a crosshair).
Here's a vid for anyone who is curious. Both the ipad and iphone versions are shown. He doesnt show the tilt controls, which are actually really awesome.
Carmack already said in interviews that's not "rage on the iphone" but more of a demo, a proof of concept. Personally, I think the fact that Tech5 is running on an Iphone in ANY capacity is pretty damn impressive. It looks like they sacrificed some diffuse texture resolution in favor of higher lightmap resolution. It could be that they're using a system that auto-cuts the geo and uses vertex lighting I suppose. Certainly a smarter option for mobile.
This is hardly paying for a demo, this game is FUN.
When they announced it would be a rails shooter I was pretty disappointed, but as of downloading this morning (I got the non-hd version because I have a 3gs), I realized they got it right.
There's a learning curve but once you get fast enough to shoot the bonuses you feel a real drive to keep going.
I started playing before work around 8:20 this morning, planning on leaving at 8:30. 8:45 rolls around and I was still glued to the phone.
