Made a tree using Zbrush. This the first making a tree. I would love to hear how to make it better. I was going for a weirwood tree. White Bark with red leaves.
Looking great! Only crit, or rather a tip, that comes to mind at the moment is on your leaf texture, you should use a reddish background that matches the leaves instead of a black background. This way when the texture mips it will grab red instead of black.
Very nice tree, but like Zip said for your foliage texture background, the bark texture background is showing on the tree branch border, and it's quite big. A proper background will mip better.
i like it very much. Especially the colors. I think a problem with your texturing is your "fear" of darker tones. Especially on the leaves it makes the planes very visible. What you wanna go instead is paint some shadows in the leaves textures and make it so that the viewer thinks certain leaves are in front of other leaves. This can either be suggested by overlapping or by making the more distant leaves darker.
What totally amazes me is how you spread this one lonely branch textured alpha plane around the tree and made some nice volume.
When I remember my last horrible try at a tree I used 3 branch variations and it still looked totally repetetive and weird in perspective.
I hope you did not only trick us in a nice pose but it holds up to the quality in every direction
Wow, Thank you guys for all the critiques and complements! I have addressed the texture mip issue and reduced the branch texture to 256x256, in addition I addressed the seam on the branch and added other angles to better display the volume of the branches.
cool beans

One thing I'm wondering. When you have these two 1024 maps, couldn't you kept the 512 size of the branches but put the grass, moss and leaf plane onto that map as well ?
But I'm not expert, there should be others who can judge that.
This is awesome man, i really dig the style. Do you think you could post a bit higher res image of the wireframe shot? I'm interested in seeing how you put the roots together but i'm having a bit of trouble seeing it well.

Exactly what i was thinking.
Absolutely beautiful work
Is it just me, or do you have a nasty seam on visible on the right one? Would be easy to remove if so.
