I haven't posted in a while. This is a bust of Eddie Raja a character made for Naughty Dog Inc. No photos were used in the creation of this character. Total time allotted 3 weeks. Enjoy.
Hey! Not bad at all. Very good work, tho if you're going for realism the facial proportions are a bit off and bringing it down. The stitch work on the vest is a bit large..and I think you could have safely baked some shadows/AO from the necklace onto the chest to help ground it.
ScoobyDoofus: I was issued the test on the 12/8 unfortunately unsuccessful. Naughty Dog would be a great company to work for and attracts great talent.
i've taken this test as well. extremely tough to nail the look they are going for, but like all tests, when the artist nails it, the artist nails it.
i'm with scooby, the stitching is rather large. your hair came out really nice for showing with a standard realtime shader, and the head model looks nice as well. i would say that the mouth could be wider and the eyes are too far apart and too large, though if you were to decrease the spacing of the eyes, the mouth would probably hold up just fine. the sculpt looks much younger, but the texturing makes him feel much older and is generally very dirty looking. the body is too "cut/ripped" around his abdomen region and doesn't feel natural. the jacket looks really nice in the sculpt, but i think you could have taken it a bit further in modeling out additional details. the shirt wrinkles around the arm don't feel as natural as they could, and the cuffs are just simply wrong imo. if you put on a long sleeve shirt, fold up the cuff a couple of times and the slide it up your arm, it wouldn't look like you have it on your model. the texturing on the shirt is questionable. the floral pattern looks nice, but the ribbing makes it feel like corduroy instead of silk/cotton/polyester (which is what you would typically see floral pattern button ups made out of).
all in all, i think this is pretty decent, but i believe they are looking for strong senior level candidates. i know they specify to take as much time as you want, but three weeks feels a bit long for as much as you accomplished. we all have other things going on with little spare time available, but at three weeks, imo, you could have pushed this even further. i wouldn't worry about doing blendshapes or expressions because you need to be able to capture the essence of the character without any expressions (i failed on this part miserably).
i hope i don't sound too harsh. i failed on my art test with many of the same points that i am bringing up on yours, but you have to realize that this guy would be your lead ( http://evolve3d.net/wp-content/gallery/hanno/lazarevic_front_detail.jpg & http://evolve3d.net/wp-content/gallery/hanno/a_uncharted_2_portrait_lazarevic.jpg ) (something i didn't realize until after i took the test).
and this guy nailed it and landed an open slot. (another one i wish i saw when i was taking it). http://www.jung3dart.com/bust.html
but then again, that's the whole point of any art test, to see how good you are as an artist without any large influence or direction because they are making a HUGE investment into you, and they need to know that they can count on you and your abilities no matter what.
Firebert: Hi there, thanks for your critiques and reply. I don't think your being harsh at all I believe your on point. Made me notice areas I could have put more care into especially the shirt cuffs and as Scooby mentioned the large stitching. I am also familiar with Hannos work, he's an extremely skilled and experienced artist, definitely look up to his work. http://evolve3d.net/feature-speaker-hanno-hagedorn/
Congarts and good luck to Jung. His entry looks great and he has some awesome work in his portfolio.
