wu thanks guys, and thanks for the tips on how to present all this better! I tweaked the curves a bit, and have a couple bigger renders on a more neutral background:
busy doing a little entry for the pre-dom war we'll see how it goes...
Really, really nice! Having just started my 3rd and final year on my Computer Games Technology degree at university, it's thoroughly depressing to see that I am no where near the level that you are at...
Inspiring work! My only critique would be on the sword to make the edge of the blade look like it had been sharpened over and over by lightening up the edge. Pretty amazing stuff!
Quality work, I love your WoW texture style. Had a look at your blog and your use of lighting and character designers are quality. What 3d package do you use? I suck at rendering, would love to know what methods you use.
@frell - that's just the default round brush. I turn off the pen pressure on the radius so it's the same size all the time. other than that, I think all the settings are default.
This is really well done. It looks great. I don't think adjusting the levels the way you did was the right way to go about fixing the "muddyness" though. Now you have areas that are completley blown out that shouldn't be. Examples being on his hair and all over his sword. You'll have to be a bit more selective in what areas you brighten up. As it stands now I think I might prefer the way you originally had it, only rendered on the new background.
Also his arms are too long. If you intended them to be that way as part of the style then it's fine, but if not I'd shorten them by about 10-15%.
Great job again, after looking at your blog I'm sure you'll have no problem finding work.
Btw: Do you intend to do a spec or normal for this guy?
Thanks for sharing that video with us. It's nice to be able to see how you work, and it surprised me how you paint "sequentially" like that (instead of blocking out the whole model first). It makes me want to try that as well, and I'm interested in checking out 3dCoat too.
@vcortis - thanks, yeah i definitely see that. I probably (definitely) overtweaked it. also I did mean to make his arms longer than normal, but hey if it looks goofy then my design is probably goofy i might do normals + spec if i get some time soon, but I have to admit that spec maps on hand painted stuff kinda confuses me
@haikai - yeah i usually would block out the whole thing at least a little bit, but since i'm sticking pretty close to my concept i'm just jumping right in. plus it feels good to get something like the face done, so it can inform the rest of the texturing.
really amazing texture work! its interesting watching you work in 3dcoat, is there any reason you aren't using symmetry while painting? obviously i'd eventually turn off symmetry to add some asymmetry to the face.
in case you didn't know, hit "s" and chose x axis. you can also move the axis by holding down "tab".
ah thanks, spitty-- yeah i'm actually pretty new to 3d coat myself, so i was just doing the face in photoshop. I'll be using symmetry from now on though

Pretty amazing that it's all just diffuse.
is the mouth just painted on, too?
thanx for sharing
I would also love to see your work flow
@Huntard - that's a good idea, i'll try and squeeze that in and see how it looks
@SinisterUrge - I use maya for everything, and then the texturing is done in 3d coat and photoshop.
so I made a little (really little... don't get excited :P) video of how i started painting my pre-dom war entry in 3d coat:

in the video I mirror his face in photoshop cause eventually i'll add specific details to each side of his face.
I'm planning on filming more of the process, hopefully in the next couple days (thanksgiving break yay!!)

The dwarf is looking great so far.

i never seem to be able to get the colours looking that vibrant.

but your great work means I'm jealous enough to get motivated to improve my own!
