Explanation - 3D Texture with HeightField Utility in Maya

While going over a lesson in my Lighting/Texturing class, my teacher was going over how the HeightField utility in Maya can be used to get a general gauge of how a displacement map will look before actually rendering out an image. He went on to say that while it works with 2D textures, it doesn't work with 3D textures.

Apparently it's been like this for multiple versions and he hasn't been able to find any documentation explaining why it doesn't work with that specific utility other than vague "it just doesn't work statements". Anyway, he's offering us 5 extra points on our final grade if we can manage to find some sort of documentation explaining why 3D Textures don't work with the HeightField utility.

So I thought I'd come ask you, oh great wise Internet Modelling/Texturing/Animating experts.
