I posted this in the WAYWO thread a couple of days ago, but I figured a WIP thread might be handy. So here it is.
A well-to-do gentleman of the early 17th century Netherlands. An era when fancy facial hair and stylish hats met, and were combined with ridiculous shoes.
Quickie paintover to give an idea:
I'll be going for a low poly of about 10k.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to make such fancy facial hair for the low poly? I think the moustache would work with just alphas, but I'm not sure if the beard will be possible or easy without volume.

I don't really know much about characters, so I don't have any suggestions for the facial hair, but if you can pull off the mustache with alphas, I think it should work pretty well for the beard too.
White socks, though.
He looks a bit like a toy not like a real person. also the bent on the lower right leg is too much IMO.
I love the head .
Try to imagine the underlying skeleton and you will see that the torso is really short. Well I guess thats what im trying to say lol
StefanH: You're completely right - I wish I'd seen that sooner, because it's a pain to change now. What threw me off was the belt. People back then had their belts much higher than we do, but I only implemented that on the top part.
Here, then, is a bit of fiddling: left is the original, middle a change in proportions, right a silhouette version of that second one. Is it better? I'd like to get it right this time .
heaps better on the proportions, could stand to be scaled in on x a little more even (possibly ). I notice all your chars have got the same style proportions going on
Anyways, love the character choice, noone does proper moustachio'd gentlemen these days :P
Hope you get all the fancy frilly bits and the hair workin well ^^
I'll be visiting the Rijksmuseum on Friday to study some actual 17th century portraits. Exciting!
I love that guy's chicken.
