Hey guys! I'm updating my portfolio so I decided to make a loveable Murloc named Murdermus! Heres the base mesh and the Zbrush I'm painting now, please hook me up with any crits you can!
Heres the start of the helmet, I wanted to give it a Rhino like feel, I'm going to attach it to his body using straps and what not, but let me know what youguys think.
He's a bit more frog-like than the World of Warcraft versions. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if you want a really accurate portrayal, the WoW Murlocks have a distinctly fish like jawline - theres a distinct cartilage structure around the mouth like on a real fish, and very little flesh or muscular detail.
I know it's the polygonal limit of the actual in-game WoW model but I prefer the mouth shape of the original. The zbrush mouth is a bit...droopy? I can see you're going for a more realistic Murloc but perhaps changing the mouth shape would give it that better likeness to the original version.
It is a great work in progress, though. Well done. =]
You should add straps for his helmet if you ask me.
Also, the skull he has on his head as a helmet.. If I understand it right, his eyes look through the eye socket on one side, but on the other side it's been chipped off. Is that right?
If so, maybe you should leave some remnants of the socket to avoid any confusion, such as mine. ^^ Plus I think it'd look cooler!
Oh I will be adding more to the helmet including straps, the helmet is a spiky shell, its got holes in it so that he can put his spines in it and see out one side:)
The pole arm is looking quite menacing as well, really nice sculpt of the spiral there. Handle could use a little more love though, maybe a seaweed wrap or something.
I feel like the mouth could be alittle more triangular too, it's kinda too rounded out currently. I'd try keeping it pointed and sinister like a barracuda or bluefish or something. its looking alittle too grouper'ish right now.
I like his head and torso, but there's something fishy (lolpun) going on with the arms and to a lesser extent the legs.. I think the hands and feet might be looking too small, WoW murlocs have pretty large hands and feet in proportion to the rest of their limb. Even if you aren't following blizzards model 100%, I still think theyre looking a little small.
Awesome, thanks for the tips about the hands and feet, I'll have to go back and enlarge them! I baked out my maps lastnight and started texturing, the mesh is about 9k tris.
Is there something going on with the channels in your normal map? it looks like the scaly details are lit from below. Is this in MAX? what did you bake with?
Yeah its in max, I see what ya mean. I been staring at it all day didn't even notice! I used max to bake out the normals, got any advice on any other program Zbrush maybe?

Love the conch shell helmet, great choice.
