I am getting some strange things happening with my texture in Max and Mudbox, please see the images. The texture seems to be distorting or stretching in an unusual way, kinda zig zagging.
I initially thought there was an issue with my texture map, but it looks fine in Photoshop, just goes haywire in 3D.
Now I'm not sure if its an issue with my UVs or something else.
The model is a poly crunched medium res one, that I have relaxed slightly. You can still see some artefacts on the grey render, but I don't necessarily think they would cause the texture issues.
So what would cause this? Uvs? If so is it worth me spending time re-UVing? or is there a better way? I'm not keen on Uving as I don't want to fiddle with the colour map too much as it is particular to the model, and I'm worried I may loose some quality if I bake it down.

If not, I'd suggest making a proper low poly and work from there.
Edit Nevermind, didn´t see you just said that
Yep it is just a plank of wood, but it has to stay medium res I'm afraid - customer requirement!
I did indeed do that. Is this not a good thing? should I have done it a different way?
Here are some more images of the wire and UV.
Is there any notable lose in texture quality if I bake the colour map to another mesh?
Do you think re mapping the UVs better will solve it? Or is there a deeper problem, maybe with the mesh? (it was pro otimized, as mentioned earler)
Thanks
I have decided to re UV it after all, and hopefully this will resolve the issue and fix some others too!
