Should I unwrap this as separate elements?I'm trying to improve my unwrapping methods.

Someone will likely move this to the correct thread. Questions to ask yourself are:
-how big is this object
-how close can the player get to it
-can the player view it from all angles
You can determine what areas are important and can you overlap uv's to save space and get more out of your map.

It's going to be used in a tower defense game.I wanted to try to avoid overlapping uvs.

it's a really simple object, just go for it man, couldn't take more than 10-15 minutes. Do a quick test texture and you'll find the trouble areas you'll have to redo. There's no reason to avoid overlapping UVs.

As long as its seperate objects, it really shouldn't be hard. Honestly I would start with a planar map, and work out from there.
