Once you have the hair planes laid out in max or Maya, bringing it into mudbox as one mesh and painting the hair in 3G seems like it might give good results. Would this be possible? And realistic?
If they're planes, I think it would be easier to paint in 2d / photoshop. If they're wrapped around the head already, it might be harder to paint on the strands you want?
Naa... either create a few planes and arrange them as needed. OR, lay out the planes, use viewport canvas to lay down guides and base colors and refine with photoshop.
