Hi All.
I'll be teaming up with Zoidburg on this one. It will be the first challenge that we both have entered. Hopefully it all goes smoothly.
We thought that we would be safe and start off with just a cityscape and if we think we are on top of it we will turn the scene into a warzone. Taking inspiration from War of the Worlds and Mars Attaks.
Environment: Oriental inspired cityscape + Invasion(if time persists)
Challenges:
- Time!!!
This is easily going to be the biggest challenge for us. It will determine if we can turn our relatively static cityscape into something a lot more dynamic.
- UDK
Ive never used it and Zoid has used it briefly, so both of us will have to become masters in a very short amount of time.
- Visual Style.
We would like to create something stylised and toon rendered, but we will have to see how it goes.
Hopefully we can create something you will all like.
Wish us luck!
Cheers.
Tets.

in any case looking forward to it. sounds like a fun comp.
computer has been dying for the past we months and its finally had it (not the BSOD from my machine). all new parts should be arriving any day to continue working on the comp
Tets should be posting a more appropriate update soon
Good work so far =]
Here is a test with some of the construction pieces that ive been making.
Two quickies: watch out for real thin details as they are the first to become lost in the side-scroller camera. Second, for wires and such, take a closer look at UDK's SplineLoftActor system. You can see examples in the GDC features demo level, and they can save a lot of time when you get in the realtime.
working toward the plan of splitting up the details into 3 layers
layer1- small details (pretty much cubes or 2 cubes worth of tri's)
layer2- medium detailed clutter props like bin's fridge's, and so on
layer3- then the higher budget 'feature' props like pushbikes to vehicles
Ive been working on allot of the level1 small details to fill up street front shops and just low level clutter, while spending probably the majority of my time so far learning the UDK :P
no normal / spec maps yet all to be done at some point soon
mapping cubes is fun.... -_-
Just hurts looking at it. Sorry that happened.
