Polycount.

Hiya guys. Great website. Stumbled on this site doing some research and thought I's sign up.

My first question. Im currently modelling a USP Handgun model and could do with your expert advice. How many Tris would you guys reccomend for current gen? 500? 1000? Not poly's......tris. Much appriciated.

    What view will this be seen in? First-person? Third-person?
    Are there going to be a lot of them on screen at once, or just one?

    These factors (and others) all determine how you should look at your triangle count.

    If it's a first-person view model for a next-gen FPS (think TF2, L4D2, UT3 etc), then you'll probably want to spend up to 5000 triangles on it, since it's just a handgun.

    For third-person models probably closer to 1000 triangles is more appropriate, but it really depends. It could go up to 2000 or as low as 500 depending on the platform / engine / view distance / number on screen etc.

    Thanks MoP. Well I'm just trying to develop my portfolio, soooo lets say I'd like it to be a gun featured in a current gen FPS. You would say 5000 tris? Seems a lot no? Saying that I have no idea. Atm the LP version is around 1000, with a few more details to be added. Then I'll bake the HP onto the LP. If I can use 5000 tris it may not be worth it.

    I think Crytek was recommending to Obsidian Edge 5000ish tris for first person weapons, 1500ish for third person ones. Doesn't seem like much to me for a modern shooter, especially since the weapons always seemed like the main characters.

    Halo Reach used 6k~ for small hand guns 15-17k~ for the majority of "2 handed" guns.

    You definitely want to set your limits pretty high, its easy to make simpler LODs for 3rd person view from a more detailed mesh.

    Cheers guys. Heres a quick image of the HP so far. Its not very HP at all really. Need to add some more details in and what not. Cheers for the help so far. C & C welcome.
