I'm really excited about this challenge and it's starting at the perfect time for me since work has been slow lately.
I'm going to create an eerie, nightmarish scene. Most of my inspiration is going to be pulled from my favorite artist, Zdzisław Beksiński.
Challenges:
- Getting re-acquainted with UDK (It's been awhile)
- Creating tons of organic objects and shapes in ZBrush
- Using lighting and shadows to convey an eerie mood.
- Completing the challenge and being satisfied with my results!
- Non-photorealistic art-style
Moodboard/Reference is done for now. I'll add more to it as the challenge continues.
Next up: Designing the scene!
Good luck everyone!

I think you may run in to trouble filling your scene. All of the concepts you are using don't have anything "busy" in them, which also shows in your concept so far. The layout looks very interesting, but it looks like it should be bare, which would make for a rather boring beat'em up level.
Try thinking of things that you would see along the way walking down this path.
Possible things to add to the scene:
Foreground/Avatar depth:
- Make the path so that it's covered with bones/fossils. (I see the enemies in this type of level as types of skeletons coming out of the ground.)
- Broken buildings/pillars.
- Some dead/poisonous plants that are growing over the paths and structures. (possibly emitting deadly gases)
Background elements:
- A of couple large buildings in the distance.
- Tree stumps, dead/fallen trees.
- Large rock/thorn structures.
Going to try to some more detailed concepts of specific areas soon, but I'm going to be gone most of the weekend.
Any other suggestions or ideas are much appreciated.
Cheers!
Going out of town for the weekend so probably my last update until Monday.
Here is a close-up concept of the first bridge. I'm already seeing that I'm going to have design the foreground elements differently so that they don't cover up the player so much, but it get's the general idea across. Comments/Critiques are welcome.
and a perfect theme track would be.

@hawken - I agree with the comment on more multi-plane elements. I'll think on this tonight and see what I can come up with.
Cheers!
