Just creating this thread as a placeholder, will update it as we nail down the idea.
We're going to be doing an environment that is heavly inspired by the side scroller XBLA game, Scott Pilgrim.
Me and Arman have already talked about some of the challenges we want to tackle,
- Creating / Prototyping a pixel shader... see if we can capture some of that pixelated look within a "next gen" environment.
- Testing out and having fun with the new UDK updates (we haven't used it in awhile)hopefully utilizing all the new features.
- Bring this environment to life so when we do a fly-through (side scrolling) we can have some nice dynamic effects that will sell this piece even more.
- MAKE THIS SEEM LIKE ITS A REAL GAME!
Update 1
This is the mock up image Arman and I have come up with for this challenge (Thanks to Arman's shitty iphone).
We've split it up into 3 major sections:
Park / Suburb Outskirts (start)
Alley / Downtown
Outskirt Downtown \ Underpass Entrance (end)
We're gonna try our best to get in as much game reference as possible so hopefully everything will come together nicely.
Our next step is to get a prop list together, and get some pre-prod done, also going to try and figure out the best way to tackle the snow (geometry mix with shader lovin = win hopefully)

We have been talking about the comp for the past week and bouncing ideas off eachother of what we wanted to do, the points above are the most important things for us for this competition.

Hey all, we figured we haven't updated in awhile, so we should probably get the ball rolling, so here we are...
Currently we are laying everything out in 3d max before we bring it into UDK, so we apologize for the shitty-ness... we are also still trying to find somewhat of a texture style, and we'll probably go do a second texture pass once all the items are in the engine.
I've been pretty lazy as of late, so yar Arman has been doing some really good work (one of them being the Swing set, which turned out really nice) but hopefully I can get my ass in motion :P
Anywho... that's it for now, we're gonna keep on working on the first "scene" then move onto the Suburb / Alley way.
Hopefully once we get this stuff in the engine and start lighting, it'll come out more. Plus we still have a couple of layers that will reaally help push the parallaxing (kinda like what you did chris with your background city scape).
