People shouldn't put animals in the waste bin. Cats, dogs, small children, or what have you. That said, god only knows why THIS is what our news is reporting. I assume it's the single most important thing in the world at the moment? Not... the war?
I think it hits people more is that it might have been someone on your street, doing it to your cat, which is part of your family. We can relate to it, and that's why we care more about the cat then Africa, its not so much in our face.
We shouldn't automaticly nullify any kind of horrible thing just because a much more horrible thing exists.
We have human rights in place, animal rights, no so much, considering even the police said it wasn't a crime.

The cat was already a rescue cat and must have suffered previously.

Your neighbor dumps 6lbs of some horribly rancid liquid in your garbage can instead of his own. The smell never quite goes away until you switch cans with him, the memory lasts forever.
A series of car bombs go off in the middle east killing 60+ people... 72 bodies found on a Ranch in Mexico and its all background noise on the drive into work.
I can only imagine the response this would get if it happened in Japan...
It's good to see humanity hasn't been completely lost, at least it still cares about something... But the internet has turned everyone into cat loving hermits who would gladly stick a shiv in someone to defend the honor of a cat.

They hadn't CCTV'd their wheelie bin, somebody kept knocking into their car so they decided to set up CCTV, it just so happened to have their bin in sight too.
