This is a diffuse painted character model named, "Brutus," from a recent freelance job with
InsaneRoot. It's nice working with them, and they were kind enough to allow me to post this even though the game isn't complete. I actually don't know a whole lot about the game project myself, but I hope you'll all keep them in mind when the game is released.
The original concept is by the awesome
Matt Dixon. I love Matt's character paintings, so check them out if you've not seen them before. I superimposed the 3d model onto his concept for the fake promo image (which obviously has some quick Photoshop cheats painted on there). I didn't spend too much time on it, but I wanted to make more of an effort on presentation than I have on previous models.
The character model with weapon is roughly 6k triangles, and it's all on a 1k map at the moment although all the UVs were arranged in a modular way to accommodate texture swaps and adjustments if necessary. I was able to get a lot done just by projecting parts of the concept art onto the model's textures in an attempt to maintain an organic look. There were some requested deviations from the concept, but I tried to keep it as faithful as I could otherwise. Rigged and initial poses by my animator friend,
Issam Zejly.
It's "done," but I'm always interested in hearing feedback. Thanks!

My only crit really is that he needs the guns from the concept. Especially in that last 'Excalibur' pose, he would look a lot more 'Brutus' with those two massive guns than what is comparitively a pretty weedy looking sword. It seems like the sword would be his backup weapon, whereas the poses suggest it's a main weapon which I don't think really works.
Regardless, that doesn't take away from the fact you did an aweesome job!
Ged - Yea, actually the head was one of the things that was requested to be changed. There was another concept of a face/beard/hair that I went by for the final model. I kind of prefer the shaggy/weathered look of the guy in the original concept, but maybe that wasn't the right direction for the character.
creationtwentytwo - I totally agree about the guns, but the designs for those were never quite finalized so I was only asked to make the sword. Perhaps there will be some new guns in the future.
catstyle - Hehe, I was afraid making the images bigger would reveal the limits of the texture resolution (and my artistic flaws!). But you're right- I updated the breakdown image with a higher resolution version.
This is the best thing ever to be done. Ever.
Make me wanna do something similar ^____^
Ohyea, forgot to mention that. I usually use Maya + BodyPaint/PS. I don't know what the future of BodyPaint is going to be with the advent of all these other new 3d painting alternatives, but I still prefer it for its familiarity.
character looks like something out of Brutal Legends
Sorry for so many posts :poly136:
Love the modular hair design, alpha mapping never really looks prestine with my work but you nailed it here. Saved for reference
