zbrush brush problems

hey all, i just got zbrush 4 and i was following the training vid on how to make a concept car,

when it gets the part about painting in the polygroups it says to use the layer brush to paint it in, but it doesn't seem to be working for me, the brush is acting like it is set to the drag and drop function(which it isn't) and it leaves little bits of color behind instead of painting a solid color.
i tried out the other "layer" brushes and they all seem to do the same thing

is anyone else having the same problem or have any idea what is coursing it

I turned z add on and put it to 0 and it worked but it bothers me because in alien helmet he does that and z add isnt on I wonder why this happens.

There's no need to use the layer brush for painting only; I don't think it's algorithms would lend itself to be useful in anyway. You'd get better behaviour using the standard brush, RGB on, Zadd/sub off.
