Just came from, and now I want to live there so bad! :poly142:
Mahalo!
Don't ruin it for yourself. Its a great place to visits but a hard place to live, thanks to the cost of housing. $250,000 will get you a run down 700sq ft, 1 bdr, condo built in the 70's. Old condos are great for having massive assessments and hefty dues so tack on another $200-700 a mo.
Add to it that about 90% of the food is imported so you pay crazy prices for simple items.
Most of the jobs are in the service industry so don't except to be paid well...
I live in Hawaii and the lack of game jobs sucks really bad
There used to be a few companies here, Konami, Squaresoft, Blue Lava -> Jamdat -> EA Mobile, and the place I used to work Mobicore. Now there's only Avatar Reality and Tetris Online. There also seems to be some sort of flash/facebook game developer opening up shop here but they haven't given me the time of day so... oh well...
As Vig said the cost of living here is ridiculous. Add that to the fact that companies generally pay their employees lower salaries than comparable jobs elsewhere in the country.
Best of luck to you if you wish to live and work here in Hawaii. I believe that I'll need to move from here in order to re-enter the industry.
Sorry to dig up an old thread guys.
I just received word that my wife is getting stationed in Hawaii so I'm hoping to find work of any kind out there. Has there been any improvements in the job market there?
On the + side, If you are a surfer like myself, living in Hawaii under any condition other than to live there. While getting by on minimum pay. Even if art jobs or games at that existed. You'd take it in a heart beat.
That again, is only if Surfing is your all time life passion and you are very fond about it for life. Otherwise, you will probably do OK as computer turtles in your shells online. But stepping out, you will get rock fever.

If you would consider working in the animation industry there's also Hawaii Animation Studios.

But I'll still try to get it! anyway the taxes are not that bad, for now quality of living > money.

My advice is to start finding remote freelance work or learn how to code and make indie games (or both).
Your only hope for local onsite employment on Oahu as far as I can tell is:
http://www.tetrisonline.com/jobs.php
http://www.hyperspective.com/about-us/employment/
https://honolulu.craigslist.org/med/ <- In my experience these aren't serious jobs...
https://honolulu.craigslist.org/egr/ <- CAD jobs are here...
Best of luck!
