could we/I use the maximum polycount if all of the tiers use a morph?
I'll start concepting things out tonight and hopefully have a base done and in Zbrush tomorrow
Just so as not to be confusing or step on any toes- this is not an offically sanctioned Polycount challenge- just a friendly activity--all are welcome to participate through the assignment however they feel inspired. Take a week- Make something B.A.
and are there any texture limits?
If you are still curious take a look at last weeks challenge found here, and see what was done from start to finish.
I wish I could finish it in time :S Enjoy! Now...for the backstory...hmmm...
I was wrapping up my Tier 1 (pun intended) when I realized... Brown and purple are terrible together. Currently playing with a few other colors. This is my second attempt at hand painting, and I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. My wood looks terrible, and my metal looks half-finished... Suggestions appreciated!
EDIT: Trying out some crimson at the suggestion of a friend, and it's looking pretty good.
Well done with the scythe! For your metal, I suggest adding a subtle layer of grunge and scratches to make your textures more interesting. Make the metal look a little more shiny, seems flat and dull. If you're not strictly hand painting, overlay real photos over your wood and metal just to add a tinge of realism in there. :poly142: I hope this helps.
This is pretty much the first serious hand painting project I've attempted, so I'm not too great at getting the textures to pop like they should. I understand it should be a bit shinier and grittier, but I've not had much trying to pull that off. Definitely going to get it right before the deadline, though.
And yea, I want to paint it 100%. No photos!
1 K Maybe? That is in-game average I believe.
I probably won't finish...I'm working on my female sculpture this was a for fun one. ANYWHOOO here is what I came up with.
If I got time I'll finish up the tier 1 and 2. We'll see
Thought I would have a go at this after I came up with a stupid idea. Not sure if the proportions are right, and I'm havent textured before so it will be bad.
The end flame part is coated in a poison and then its stabbed into the victim, and with a twist it snaps of inside, pretty much a garanteed death.
The progression has yet to be decided maybe will end in the dreaded FourCandle Sword.
I threw my Tier3 in the new Marmoset v1.01 and this is what It looks like
Metal is very low contrast and dark except for highlights. Get rid of that noisy, cloudy shit and get some flatter, darker surface detail in there to contrast with your highlights. If you have a flat surface, there's very little reason for it to be dark in one place and lighter a few inches away.
Really sell your planes! Don't be afraid to communicate changes in direction and depth with your diffuse map. Remember reflected light! Getting that little bit of lightness where one surface faces another goes a looonnnggg way to selling realistic metal diffuse maps.
Quick mouse paintover with some ideas.
For tier three you should have a big flower bloom
Stupid AO didn't come out as well as I wanted wtb help on better AO renders
Tier 1 499tris
Tier 2 994tris
Tier 3 1480tris
1058 probably could easily get rid of them on the blade if neccesary.
Hits with burning flames of justice against those whom are guilty for plus six damage. Also has a handy beverage holder.
I really like the design of those Mitz, what kinda problems are you having with your AO bake? is it not as prominent as you'd like it to be?
So you guys know, I have no real background in modeling or texturing, just a lot of reading and fooling around in 3ds max and photoshop. I am using this as a "first" run through of the process. Let me know what you think and any advice would be greatly appreciated!! (be gentle :poly124:)
Still tweaking the model:
Pics soon... image link isn't working. Cause I'm new? I'll check back in a little bit and try editing the post. For now here are the file paths.

AO will only 'occlude' on areas where there are face(s) and or geometry that are close to each other...
They weigh in at 492, 572, and 1032 tris, and all on the same 1024 sheet.
as far as back story goes, I was trying to convey a regular soldiers sword, an officers sword, and then some kind of hell blade that has been affixed to a regular handle so some special soldiers can kick ass with it.
thanks suprore, looks better now
bretmcnee- I was thinking the final blades were a gift to some human army, from some evil force.
I didnt really think out the back story too hard.
Visceral- Yeah, the blade is supposed to look like coarse iron that has been forged quickly, with lots of imperfections and a lack of shininess. almost lava-like
