General purpose rig in maya, feedback plz

Hey guys,
I have very basic knowledge of rigging, and I wanted to make sure I am doing this right. I typically create a very basic skeleton with the joint tool and then painstakingly paint the weights to achieve poses I want with a smooth bind. I have provided a pic of the current character I'm working on as well as the mesh makeup and the rig I have made. Could someone suggest settings for the smooth bind as well as look over the rig... it always takes forever to paint the weights around the shoulder correctly in order to have decent deformation and I think it may be because the skeleton doesn't have enough joints in the torso? Tips suggestions please!
