I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to transfer meshes between two open 3dsmax scenes (I have two instances of max open) without having to export a file to the HD.
Yeah, File -> Merge will do this (unless they renamed it in recent releases). It gives you a list of all the objects in the scene and you can choose any selection of objects to import directly from the scene.
I guess it was Borislav Petrov (bobo) who suggested once about writing a maxscript (or he did somewhere, sometime) that would transfer 3d meshes or models through maxscript in max as maxscript seems to be more backwards compatible as the *.max and *.3ds formats that max comes with.
i think it was initially called "bff" back from five and you could save your max 5 files into scripts and run those in max4, not sure if he worked further on it
BFF did work great, but has gathered a bit of dust since then.
Another way would be to save the source Max file, then create a Container or Xref in the target scene. Everytime you save the source, the target Container would be updated. If Xref, IIRC you have to manually refresh the target .
