3DS Max clipping error and zoom speed

I'm having this problem (pic attached), where when I zoom close to the model the shift tool starts to clip into and behind the model so I cant actually see the tool to accurately move things with. Does any one have a clue how to fix this?

Also I'm having a problem zooming with the middle mouse and ctrl alt method. I press z to zoom to extents, and then I try and zoom to get in closer and mess about and manipulate things, but its way to sensitive I end up over shooting.

With the way the zoom is its not possible to work with the close up small intricate parts of the model. Is there a way to adjust the sensitivity somehow?

Try working in the ortho view. that should work around the clipping issue.
Id check the scale your working at, your object could be tiny in your scene. also reset your xforms.

You can ajust the viewport's clipping planes...but modeling in a proper scale is the better solution...

The trouble is its off the axis, and its kind of an awkward area that I doubt would be easy to model in the ortho views even if it wasnt.

I've sorted the clipping plane.

I thought I was modelling in a proper scale. Is there some kind of limit, that objects should be x bigger than the grid?
