I feel that way about most of my work...not so proud, but might as well post and stay at least semi active on art forums. Mostly it's just me responding to my own threads, but sometimes people do reply
sketch i began over the weekend that evolved into this. Reference used. untimed
gorgon princess. attempting to integrate homosapien & serpent. difficult to do because the drastic differences in head shape and feature placement. did multiple designs; some of which I deleted and are not shown, but settled on this one because I liked the overall shape. Much more snake like than anticipated, but I'm running with it. decided to make her royalty. not done. plan to work on it more
Hey, good to see your progress! I like that you moved away from the soft brush-look for your recent pieces. Looks more confident.
One thing I noticed through most of your colored paintings is that they could use more contrast towards the lower end of values:
You don't have to bring the shadows down a lot but even just making them slightly more saturated would help. I personally constantly switch blend modes while painting and use Linear/Color Burn a lot. You might try out if that works for you.
thanks for the advice and the kind words DerRazputin. I've been making a more conscious effort to move away from soft brushes after so many people had advised me to do so. Edge quality is something I'm always considering now.
I'll try using more saturated shadows, and maybe experimenting with the linear &/or color burn blend modes. Color isn't something I have a firm grasp on at all, and I'm still experimenting with colors a lot (often unsuccessfully). So much to learn
Took a look at some of your work as well. I like that you have a mix of 2D and 3D. I've always been a big fan of the metroid series as well.
Cool concepts, dude.
Ha, no, by "tint" I meant change the hue a bit. All in all, the whole color scheme was a bit too yellow-ish and the shadows were lacking some definition. I actually darkened them some more and added a hint of blue but my edit might've been too subtle. Sorry for any confusion.
Based on the sky's atmosphere, in outdoor conditions most shadows appear blu-ish (except on cloudy days). But, regardless of physics, it gives a nice contrast to the yellow.
Comparing the two side by side, I definitely see the contrast adjustment, which I do like...makes it look less washed out. I'm not seeing the hue adjustments though...either way I do need to work on my lighting more
Little more work on this shield after getting some advice. Turned into this. Still doesn't remind me of a shield per se, but perhaps I should create the back side...? If nothing else, it would show a greater understanding of the subject matter...guess we will see
random steampunk portraits...although could use more steampunk emphasis as it's not quite clear that's what it's supposed to be. Still, it was fun and didn't take too long
Your sketches have been looking good lately! I would say that for the shield, the biggest thing I notice is a lack of a smooth transition between values in some spots. The areas near the runes and the gold near the bottom are very good, but its still a little harsh in some spots. Keep it up!
thanks, another buddy of mine gave me the same critique. I grew so tired of looking at it though, that I had to put it down. maybe I'll revisit some day
Still not entirely satisfied, but I'm tired of looking at it. Learned a thing or two about color more than anything. May or may not return to it. Still, I think it's a pretty good representation of where I currently stand as a digital artist, and that I'm able to take a quick sketch to full color concept...even if the concept did change a little in the process.
After painting and repainting, I finally ended up with a result I'm fairly pleased with. Doesn't match the thumbnail exactly, but I think the translation is still passable.
Refined and painted one of the swords. Initial sketch --> Refined Sketch --> Flats --> Paints --> Final. I plan to do more of these. Keeping the designs somewhat straightforward and placing more emphasis on the painting/rendering in order to produce a more finished product.
...the good and the bad. I've been working, but not posting. Rendering, and in some cases redesigning the swords. There's a lot more to show than this, but this is all I want to show for now.
more stabby stabs. still having fun with these, and learning to be more liberal with my colors. Still, i couldn't make a proper decision with the skull like thing on the right most sword, which definitely shows...something about the colors just doesn't work...

Maybe use more gradients for depth and tint the shadows a bit.
something a little different...some shield concepts. still WIP

Also, checked out your site. That tip/tricks game art section is cool.
