Although I never really believed they could pull off their FPS/MMO with massive siege battles and physics , it is still kind of sad to see it go. One fewer thing PC gamers have to look forward to.
I don't think this has a single thing to do with gameplay. They rolled the dice that Larabee would be big, and they sold their studio to Intel. Larabee got canned, thus Project Offset made no sense as a part of Intel any more.
Nobody has any idea whether the game was fun because that has nothing to do with anything.
I suspect that the new outfit they've formed will develop something with a remarkable similarities to what was under development at Intel. Think Runic with Torchlight after losing Mythos, or Respawn with Wadern Morfare 3.
It is sad to see it go down this way. It would have been better if Intel could have sold Offset to somebody like EA or Microsoft so they could keep the tools and tech.

intel should make a deal that they can finish the game if they want, as long as they get a cut or something, sucks to remake something that was already development.
Just saw this at Gamasutra. Really sad news. They had some great ideas and tech, and I really hoped they could turn that into a great engine and game. Seems like Intel got in their way...though I look forward to where their new venture goes.
Was there anything to follow? This is the first I've heard of Project Offset in years. There was a tech demo several years ago shown at E3 and what appeared to be the same one shown again the following year, then nothing.

It didn't actually, only the first version of Larrabee that was first envisioned as a discrete GPU part. It's now sold as a HPC part instead, while Larrabee technology still is in R&D. When will we see a discrete GPU part based on Larrabee then? Impossible to say, since Intel hasn't divulged any information on that.
There are plenty of reasons to start your own engine. Rearranging someone else's codebase into something that works for your particular game = a lot of pain. Not Invented Here isn't just an excuse to promote your own tech.
That said, some middleware just makes sense, like physics or UI.
Followed this game for the last 5+ years ever since I heard about it on S2s website. A real shame that intel did this. I could see it happening from a mile away though. As soon as they moved their fan forums from their website to INTELs. Then within 2 weeks they shut down the forums all together.
This is why you need to be careful who you get in bed with. Hope they were able to continue production on their game using all the tech they had (which is sexy as all hell) at their new studio Fractiv llc.
It was kind of expected - I'm even surprised it didn't go down earlier. It seems development cycle was too long and despite the fact that visually it still looks top notch it has lost some(lots) of it's edge during recent years.
Ugh don't remind me... everytime I think about what could've been a little piece of me dies inside. I can't even imagine working on something for 5+ years and then having it cancelled and you get literaly 0 rights to any of it.

Same here man, I followed those guys soo closely.
Oh and I already posted info about their new team and all that a while ago :S.
This saddens me so much. I remember watching the first tech demo's, my eyes were wide, mouth hung open, drooling. Very big mess afterwords. I wish them luck with their new company!
Weird set of circumstances. I heard an abridged version of the story earlier, but it's just about as disappointing as what I heard back then.
The thing that has me wondering though is that Intel didn't want to sell off the project, the engine, or control of the staff after they decided that it wasn't necessary to keep them. It's an asset, and ultimately if they just sit on it, the name recognition that these guys have gained and their technology will just lose it's value over time. You really would have liked to see these guys move on elsewhere so they could complete what they had started.
they lost the rights to the engine it belongs to Intel now. They tried to get a contract to use it from Intel but it didnt happen. So basically they made a revolutionary engine and its sitting on a server at intel.
Collecting micro dust.
Guess they should've read the initial 'sell your soul' contract...
He makes a good point though. It didn't even seem like Intel tried to shop them around. They STILL own all the tech and the IP, and for whatever reason would rather hold onto it than either contract it out or sell it to a different publisher.
As far as Firefall goes, from what I understand they have a very old version of the Offset engine that is now heavily modified. This is because all support for the engine stopped a while ago and they haven't been able to get the latest versions.
Sucks for them, but I guess they have a version that's working well enough to complete the game.

u don't know that.
I'm ticked. I followed this closely. Fuck.

But thank you for the sweet tech demos and may it spawn something new and awesome. I'll keep my eyes open for new medieval fantasy eyecandy.

At least Mafia 2 will be out soon . I've been waiting for that game for like 6 years.

GL to everyone who was working there.

Sucks.... 5+ years of work wasted. Gone.

sad, man..
to be honest.
that still look like early gameplay tech demo.
the graphic and mechanic is very promising, why don't they develop the engine to sell?
