Edit Poly: Detach Naming Error?

Using the Detach dialog in Edit Poly (in 3ds Max), I'll take a large chunk of poly's and split it into about a dozen specifically named objects; say they're numbered, for example. I split an object into "chunk_1", "chunk_2", etc. I've noticed that if I'm resaving as "chunk_2", and "chunk_2" already exists, then sometimes the object gets detached as an abbreviated version ("chu", "chunk_", etc) or it'll add a number to the end ("chunk_2_01"). Other times, it'll rename incorrectly even if the target name doesn't exist.

This all seems to be at random (when it renames, what it renames to). Is there any rhyme or reason to why Max refuses to listen to me, or am I just hosed as per usual? I usually don't notice the mistakes until I'm looking for a specific part and notice that "glare_indicator_l_1" is actually named "gla". Really weak sauce. Anyways, thanks in advance.

I'm running 2008. I've only noticed it on Editable Poly's Detach Dialogue when you try and export to a new object named "___". It inconsistently has the behavior I've mentioned. Inconsistently, as in I'll detach 15-20 objects from one Editable Poly and get 3 or 4 that truncate. It doesn't seem to truncate to a specific char length, either; sometimes it'll cut 20 characters to 15, sometimes 12 characters to 3.
