It's a base-defense style game where you have to hold off waves of attacking enemies for as long as possible. Your 3 drones specialize in air to air combat, air to ground attack, and electronic warfare, so you have to combine their skills in creative ways to fend off mixed groups of enemies (choppers, tanks, bombers, SAMs etc).
Conor is one of those polycount members who has very few posts, but stands out more than a lot of our multi-thousand-post users. As soon as I see his name I know something awesome awaits.
Slum - my low post count is merely due to the fact that most of my posts were in the 90s when this place was the Quake 2 player model pack and Polycount was just a glimmer in Rogue13's eye :P
Snader - good point, although in-game the difference isn't very noticeable because I draw a black outline around them all and retouch them in Photoshop. The engine is Torque2D - but I tend to make my aircraft in 3D anyway and render them as sprite sheets for banking animations. It's always handy to have the 3D model for re-use later.
My 5 cents would be that collisions cause damage and tanks can't be shot with normal bullets but rather ATL missiles or bombs. You might want to spice up the projectiles too
Hawken - Only the green attack drone will be able to hit ground targets (the collision masks aren't done yet so everything's colliding with everything else at the moment!).
I'm doing everything myself, apart from the character illustrations, which were done by Martin Abel
What's wrong with random sexy anime girls? In all seriousness though, they add faces to the drones instead of them being just tiny little airplane sprites.
Anyway looking great! Can't wait to see this progress. I don't have an iPad right now but hopefully the second generation will offer a better reason to get one (pressure sensitivity!) and then I'd definitely buy it.
But yes, the girls are there to put a face to the game and make it more marketable. I don't think flying robots on their own would be enough to give it mass appeal. It's a sad state of affairs that flying robots are not enough, but there it is.
Actually Harry - you've given me an idea. If I'm going to the trouble to have human operators in the game, they should be more than just eye-candy. So I'm going to have an experience system where the more kills each girl gets, the better her special attack will be.

or how about the more kills the less clothes?
sounds good man what kind of special attacks did you have in mind?
Actually I was toying with the idea of unlockable 'outfits' for the girls, but Apple had a big clamp-down on that kind of content a while ago. I wouldn't want to annoy their censors.
Special attacks should be in the next video, so you'll see what they are then
looks awesome, i too was a bit confused by the girls, they're a bit blatently 'tits and ass'. On a real nit pick they seem a bit too scifi for what looks alot like current gen military hardware.
Thats an interesting idea, Maybe give them some random sexy flight suit after they get to a certain wave. Or maybe even go farther and do a leader board thing and have waves and score stuff. I dunno make it competitive :P Maybe even Ranks

awww i wanna know now!!
you would be amazed how many more people would play it if you did that lol
i remember buying a game when i was younger just because it had the word bikini in the title lol
Zipfinator - hehe, I was experimenting with YouTube's audioswap feature. Turns out they have some NIN on there so I thought I'd make use of it since there's no audio in my game yet.
This might just be my first impressions but i think it feels far too slow paced. It works for flight control which is meant to be about juggling many many slow moving planes, but it doesnt feel right in a "war simulation".
The easiest thing would be to scale down the drones to a third of the size so it has the appearance of faster travelling. It would also allow you to make the drones travel in attack passes, instead of shooting before the reach and turning around straight away.
As far as behaviour of the planes i would love to see something like the fighter planes in total annihilation.

Hurry up and wait? I think it suits it pretty well, and part of the explanation for the speed could be the distances between objects, as this isnt really made to scale. The game is probably going to get more hectic on its own later without being too fast. I can see there being a fast mode for fun, but to keep it casual and playable, i like the current speed.
The aircraft can be upgraded to make them faster, and I'll probably have a 5 minute game mode where you start with pre-upgraded aircraft. I don't think I'll be changing the scale at this stage - I'm pretty happy with the size of the map and the sprites as they are. I've made them big enough so that you can still see them when you touch your finger on them. It actually feels pretty hectic when you're playing it, even though things aren't moving quickly - there's a lot going on at once so you really have to multitask.

This thread delivers.

Video 2 - showing some enemies and combat. I also added an audio commentary to explain what's happening. You can watch it in HD on YouTube.

Booooobs.
yeah, its just that drones don't have pilots
idk.
I think it serves to make it more like every other asian made game
Always google before posting :-P

fletch - it's meant to be near future sci-fi. The enemy drones are operatorless, they're rogue AIs.
Video 3 - This one shows some of the software and tools I use for iPad devleopment, as well as an update on the game.
Video 4 - Showing experience points, special weapons and countermeasures.
