Team project character

Hey,
This was for a team project , and I am looking for crits for future projects so I don't repeat the same mistakes twice. I am specifially looking for crits regarding the textures. I modelled this character, but it wasn't my design. It was based off a concept with minor changes.

So here it is!



I will get a closer shot of the body texture once I get back home. There seems to be a firewall at school preventing me from uploading anything...

It just looks a little boring overall. You've got about 4 different colors in the whole character. Just looks a bit uninteresting.

I've actually reworked the color since I uploaded those pictures on sunday. I've added hints of yellow accross the armor. Adding nice variation. However, I don't plan on drastically altering the color scheme though. I'll upload the new pics as soon as I get home.

Needs something to break the symetry I think.
It looks sort of military, so maybe some kind of rank / regiment thing going on with the shoulder/arm.
Or maybe just something to indicate its purpose.
Every picture tells a story. What is this guys story?

Update! Reworked the color a tiny bit. Nothing dramatic, very subtle, but it makes a difference:

The overall proportions of the waist/hips area seems off. Is it a girl or something? Also it still seems a bit too plain/generic looking.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if it were a woman, the waist/hip section would be much wider. As for the model itself, I explained this in my first post. I made the model, however, I had to go off a concept. It is not my design. Thanks for your crits though!

Hehe, you just hit the biggest creative stumbling block ever then mate.
That point between concept artists idea and your own ideas.
Can we see the concept art? atm everyone is giving you C&C based on what we THINK you should do with it. If you already have a specific design set out for you it would help people give C&C on your ability to take concept into creation if we could see it.

I like your texture work on the metal armor plates. I see some nice slight gradients in the metal, but the black underpart is really boring. Maybe try some more subtle gradients in the underpart of the suit with some dark blues or purples.

Also, his "metal underwear" don't provide enough space for some normal male genitalia.:poly142:

I like the detail on the hands in the concept, maybe bring that through a bit.
Also in the concept the shiny head bit and the shiny body seem to blend in, but the body seems very dull compared to the shiny head in the 3d model.

Other than that tho it looks cool, very nice.

Well, in the concept, the proportions are wayyyyyyyy off. Torso and abdomen are too stretched, making the arms way too long. Also, in the concept, he looks like he is wearing a metal thong, so I had to fix that in a way. I'm out of time for making any major changes to this guy, but I'll keep in mind to follow the smaller details next time.

I had under 3 weeks to make 2 characters, skinned and unreal-ready.

something fast you could fix, your glowy bits should be casting light on the surrounding surfaces. pretty easy to fake with a soft low opacity brush in PS

They should emit light once they are in unreal. If they don't I'll keep that in mind! Thanks!

The concept is alright, nothing phenomenal if you ask me. But the texturing work is absolutely awesome. I feel as if I could touch that metal! I'm curious nobody has really commented on the texture work yet, it's the best part of this model if you ask me! Despite the lack of dramatic color variation, it still looks great! It reminds me of this: Notice how there isn't much color variation here either, does that make it less great? There are less details in your model, but considering the amount of time you had, I'd say it's acceptable.

Difference in that picture tho is a light source, it makes a huge difference. The textures are really nice tho, but the wearing is a little odd around the chest. That open hole has wear all around the edges, makes it look like something got removed / missing.

Marcus the difference between his and the one you posted is the master chief is much more fully designed, and yes there is quite a decent amount of color variation in there if you look close enough. I think the main problem with the OP's model is that it is just too simple to look complete with such a limited color scheme and minimal color variation.

So I increased the color variation on the armor a little bit. Ignore the ugly yellow unreal bones, I'm currently skinning.
